An absolute must do hike trail! Very quiet. Beautiful scenery. A lot of monkeys along the trail. The first part from Nanan to Jiasin is about 4.5 kilometres one way and does not require a permit. If you want to continue after that (which is definitely recommendable) a permit needs to be obtained from the Nanan Visitor Centet as well as from the police station which is about 300 metres from the visitor center. You can get these permits early in the morning, if return from the trail the same day. We hiked until Huangma, which is about 8 kilometres one way. The trail is accessible. Very nice jungle-like environment! All in all nicer than the trails in Taroko.
We found this better then Taroko Gorge. It is a 4 hour walk (to Jinseng and back) so you can do this coming from Hualien or Taitung. The trail is challenging but for the fit it is no problem. You can make some nice pictures here, but dont forget to just enjoy the jungle walk and the views. Well worth the little detour.
Wasn't sure whether to review this place because it is one of the most beautiful places we visited in Taiwan, but has somehow remained off the tourist trail. There was hardly anyone here which made our experience so much better. The trail is so beautiful with sweeping views, awesome suspension bridges, tranquil waterfalls, and wildlife all around. To get here we biked from Yuli. The bike ride itself was as beautiful as the hike. Be warned though, the last 6km of the road to the start of the trail is all uphill. The benefit of this was we saw a bunch of monkeys in the trees by the road that we would have missed in a car.Hopefully this place remains off the tour bus route, it would be a shame if it went the way of the Taroko Gorge.
We did the first 2 kms of the trail and back as we didn't get the permit to do the rest but even that short trek was worth it. We crossed a couple of long suspension bridges and saw a few waterfalls. Everything was beautiful and quiet. We came late around 4pm and had the trail pretty much to ourselves. The views are wondrous. Come and see Taiwanese nature at its best.
