The sand dunes are the highest I have ever seen, incredible sight! Since we were there in May, not too many tourists yet and not too hot. The view of the dunes in the evening and early morning was a sight to behold! The small moon shaped lake is unusual and a big surprise if you haven't seen it already in photos.
I highly recommend going with the camels. It's for under $20 USD. Then walk for a bit to see the Crescent Lake.
Visiting Mingsha Shan was the highlight of the trip. The dunes were something to beholdI was there around the third week of August and it was scorching hot. It is best to visit in the morning even though some guidebooks recommend an afternoon visit. I was not too adventurous to walk to the summit so I took the camel ride. It was killing two birds with one stone - an easy way to the summit as well as an experience of riding a camel. On your way up, do request your camel guide to take pictures of you on the camel. He or she will stop at some spots to take it for you. For RMB10 she snaps about 3 to 4 pictures for you on your camera. Bring a light long sleeve shirt, suntan lotion, hat and water.
always thought deserts are forlorn sandy places with only camels but this is an experience never to forget. Have climbed mountains, rocks but never a sand mountain and the incredible sight after you get on top of this is exhilarating. If not for the people and the noise it would not be an experience as the sheer joy of sharing the climb, helping each other and the orange sand boots does make it something special. Also the place is within reach for visitors unlike an Arabian desert as the visitors and the Chinese tourists are very friendly. The organizers of the place also deserve credit as it is a very safe place and well lit up after sunset.Cannot remember whether all those amenities such a s wheel chair access was available as I did not look for these in particular.
Multiple extra costs if you go with a tour. You don't need to hire the boots or the camels or the jeep or the quad bike. You can walk up the dunes without all the extra costs.Wear sandals with good soles. You'll pay if you want to slide down on a sledge and you won't hear the 'singing sounds' due to the raucous shrieks of all the other tourists. Go I early morning to minimize crowds.
As a 63 year old first time traveler to China I found the Mingsha Mountain, with its camel ride a wonderful expereince. Yes, there were some irritations, there were many people, as there are all over China, but over all it was fantastic. The end of the camel trek takes one to the Crescent Spring Oasis which is a marvel in itself. This was an unexpected break in a two week business trip, and I will be forever greatful to my hosts for taking me to Dunhuang.
