we walked up from the old port and took about an hour. The hill is a moderate slope and the way we went was up we went up fairly steep stairs-wouldn't recommend with young ones! once up though it has some amazing views, and when you think the views cant get any better you go up another level and it gets better and opens up even more of the sights. Inside the church it is an impressive display of architecture and paintwork, with ships hanging down said to be from fishermen getting blessings for their boats.Decided to get the petite train (a train looking vehicle) that took us down for a fairly cheap fare of 4 euro each.an absolute must for any visit to Marseilles!
Beautiful old basilica. Sacred breathtaking.Except, ofcourse for the rat that we spied scurrying over the floors.Well worth going out of ones way to see.Outside, after visiting the inside we stopped and relaxed to enjoy the afternoon .There were park benches to rest on that we could just relax and enjoy a box lunch with absolutely the best home made sandwich complete with bottled water drink and fresh fruit dessert that we had purchased at a local bakery.
The walk up to the church is long and steep but once you arrive it is so worth it. The views of Marseille are stunning (especially on a warm, sunny day). The inside of the church itself is completely breathtaking, the decor inside is so ornate and beautiful.
Actually, we visited Notre Dame the day after Pope John passed away so it was extremely moving to see thousands of mourners flooding the Cathedral....the Pope's photo was everywhere. The building is breathtaking, you may stumble while drinking in the splendor of the ornate items all over the ceiling, walls, halls, floors everywhere you look is something absolutely beautiful. This is a MUST SEE for all tourists to the City of Light.
I climbed up - and nearly died in the process - from the port and it was worth it for the beautiful panorama of the city and the sea. I waited for the sunset and it was amazing. A must see!
Even if it is just for the fantastic panoramic views of Marseille, it is worth the walk or bus ride to this lovely church. There are terraces and platforms 360 degrees, so great for photo opportunities, The church itself is very nice, and the crypt is also free of charge. The ornate interior is quite stunning.
Steep ascent via stairway, worth the effort for the view, but not suitable for wheels of any kind.No fee, but this is a church; you can make a donation!
The view from the top is simply stunning - giving you a different appreciation of Marseille. In addition, the church, crypt, museum and shop combine to provide a worthwhile visit.
I could stay in churches and Basilique's for a long time because Im just amazing at how the structures were built but this one is a must see both art and architecture wise. Definitely worth a quick checking out at the least.
I would recommend to take the tourist train from le Vieux Port to Notre Dame de la Garde. It's a steep climb on a hot Summer day.
Nice view do not try the restaurant / cafeteria expensive ugly and rubbish It is a nice exercise to go up on foot instead of taking car pr bus
This is the number one sight in Marseille. Not only the beautiful church but also the stunning view all ovet the city and the harbour from the church terrace. A must when visiting Marseille.
A view from the Basilique is worthy klimbing there! Breathtaking view on the city and islands of If and Frioul.
