Quick and easy to walk thru. Hundreds of masks and loads of ceramic bowls, urns and figurines. Limited collection of church related vestments, chalices, incense burners, etc.
This museum was excellent to showcase the local culture of Guatemala... I highly recommend this museum for a few hours.
A private museum on a college campus. Presented a rich history of the Mayans. Very rare artifacts on view.
Good explanations next to the exhibits. Followed a sensible timeline. Make sure to see the textile museum right next to this one.
This museum has a wonderful variety of Maya antiquities beautifully displayed. Many people avoid Guatemala City but if you can find a day to spend there, both the historical center and the museums at the at Universidad Francisco Marroquín are well worth a stop.
The collection of artifacts is large and impressive but the display needs updating. There is little signage and virtually none in English. Would be a great volunteer project for someone bilingual.
This museum for the ones know about Mayan Culture would be incomplet, because there is a lack of provenance of many pieces which lets a flavor of doubt and question marks on some of the beatiful pieces the museum has.Other wise a amazing colection of maya art almost on all the fields, ceramics, stone, jade. For the people that like the Mayan culture will be nice to visit it and its beautiful colection.
It is well presented, nicely displayed, not really big, but probably worth a visit. It is on a much smaller scale than the Archaelogical Museum in Mexico City so in this case, a little disappointing.
Mayan bible here as well as the best artifacts from most of the Mayan Ruins are store or exhibited here. Good English and Spanish Documentation
A very good experience for foreign visitors. Youngsters enjoy the tour and then the opportunity to work with clay and do "works of art".
This museum was a wonderful idea invented by a European woman who fell in love with the exquisite, and most difficult to hand weave costums the indigenous people used to wear. Each department (state) of Guatemala has it´s own designs and coloring and are most impressive to see. Unfortunately, "modernism" has set in and each time more less indigeous costums are seen as one wanders around Guatemala, especially in the city. Men´s, below the knee, trousers are less seen as "jeans" have taken over, but the collection at the museum is most worthy of seeing.
Great collection in chronological order , great facilities and nice staff, they even called a cab for me. I recommend!
The collection of Mayan artifacts is fantastic. Ranging with artifacts from the PreClassical, Classical and PostClassical periods one gets a fantastic overview of the artistic, technological and commercial advance of the Mayan Civilization. The collection is small so I strongly recommend to ask a day earlier for a reservation of a guided tour (we paid Q.250.00 for the group tour). The tour guide was very well educated on the topics and provides great Insights on the treasures of their collection. A must if you visit Guatemala City!
What a beautiful little museum! They accepted our student ids which was a nice discount, and the artifacts are in great condition. There are English and Spanish explanations for pieces, and currently a stunning display of "mascaras" (masks) in pieces from pre-Mayan until modern day culture. I usually never pay to take photos, but did here after seeing the array of perfectly in tact pieces they have on display. Though we didn't visit the other two museums on the grounds, the grounds are really pretty also. Beautiful place to spend a quiet afternoon in GC!
I thought this museum very well represented the Mayan culture. The exhibits were well-done and quite interesting. I would recommend this to anyone interested in Mayan culture.
