the great plaza was unreal to see the size of these pyramids. there were wild turkeys in the plaza just they didn't pay us any mind. it was so awesome.
Bring plenty of water, snacks and patience. It's worth the hike up the stairs to the top of the temple. We got our best pics of the park there! Our wonderful guide, Ronnie, arranged by Roam Belize, was a wealth of information, enthusiasm and shortcuts! I would highly recommend the plaza! We visited it last which was probably best. If not, everything else would probably have been anti-climactic.
I loved Tikal early in the morning with few people around and being able to wander around and soak it all in. It's not overly developed and the walks under the trees from temple to temple and the lack of tacky souveniers etc in the park itself really make it a special place
Our tour to Guatemala and Honduras would never be the same without the very helpful Gate1 staff Ms. Anna Bran, when our flight was delayed due to the extreme cold weather in Toronto , wealso missed our connected flight from El Salvador to Guatemala City . Thanks to Anna's reassurance over our frantic phone call to her , we were met by a friendly faced driver Ovideo atGuatemala airport and from then on everything went smoothly . ( although we missed out a full day of the tour due to our delay ) , but we still need to give Anna credit for her professionalism to deal with situation like ours . Thank you Anna and Ovideo !We had already booked with Gate 1 for another trip to Classic Baltics with Krakow in August 25.Thank you Gate 1 and your wonderful staffs !!! We are your strong supporter !!!Albert Chan
Here you'll find the twin temples I and II that make Tikal world famous. When we visited one couldn't climb temple I. The north acropolis has smaller but interesting structures and you'll find stelae that record the history of the city. In Copan stelae were more impressive but these are interesting too. The south acropolis is also interesting.
Most probably one of the greatest remaining mayan sites, this ancient magacity will offer you a mystical experience as rarely encountered. Doing the afternoon tour offered us the chance to have the place almost for ourselves. Watching the temples and the jungle dive into the night from the main temple was absolutely magnificent.
The Great Plaza is the centre piece of Tikal. You can climb all over the ruins, and up the pyramid, but be prepared to share the space with lots of other tourists. It's a great place to picnic.
The whole complex is magical and awe inspiring. The Great Plaza is the centrepiece but some of the 'lesser' structures are equally fascinating. We were fortunate to have a fantastic guide (thank you Mario) who pointed out loads of things we would have missed otherwise. The fantastic jungle setting adds hugely to the whole experience.
The entire Mayan complex is magnificent. We were fortunate to be there when it was not crowded. The bird watching is also magnificent at dusk.
Standing in the central plaza and seeing the twin structures of Temples I and IV gives one the sense of the immensity of the Mayan site. In addition, in the surrounding trees, you will see a lot of beautiful birds --- an ivory-billed woodpecker, toucanettes, brown jays and many more. We saw may serious birdwatchers who had come more for the avian species than the Mayan archaeology.
A great piece of history. I spent my time wondering the time and skill it must have taken to construct. I came later in the afternoon once most of the crowds had come and gone and the temperature was cooler. To have the place practically empty was amazing and added to the experience. With the surrounding forest and the birds and monkeys it was a great experience.
The amazing feeling you get by knowing that Mayans congregated here for events. You must do the Sunrise Tour, this will help you beat the crowds. The history and culture of the Mayans is amazing.
For me, this is the best part of the site. It help to bring you back in time. The restoration is good and the different building give you a good idea of the activity
Templo I, a mausoleum for the Late classic ruler Ah Cacau, is the famous temple seen in most pictures from Tikal. It did not matter if I viewed the monument from the Great Plaza or climbed to the top of Templo II located across from the plaza. It was magical to see it and to be there.
Go early or stay late . . . consider the Sunrise tour from the Jungle Lodge. They also give a Moon-Lite tour with full moons. A great experience.
