What a wonderful experience for the whole family! We did the volunteering tour and everyone involved enjoyed everything about our morning. Our teenaged daughters loved feeding the animals and even Granny held the snake (a first!). Carlos, our guide, was both personable and informative and made an already enjoyable morning even better. We would recommend this for anyone interested in wildlife and protecting the indigenous species here in Costa Rica. It felt like we were helping a good cause. Thank you for a great time!
After reading a few reviews that weren't exactly positive I wasn't sure what to expect. I must say this was a great way to spend a morning. I highly recommend it if you are an animal lover. Plus your proceeds go to help the animals.
Brilliant tour of the center - our guide was very knowledgeable about the animals of Costa Rica; we were able to stroke the hand of a spider monkey while learning about monkeys in the wild. A short tour and very educational and all the money goes to support Proyecto Asis. Perfect for families.
Proyecto Asis is located an hour bus ride from La Fortuna town. We took the tour where you also get to feed the animals(the volunteering tour). It was so much fun learning about the animals and why they´re at the project and what they do to help the animals. It was also very fun feeding them and just hangout in the area. I really recommend everyone to contribute and do the volunteering!
Our family did this tour on a rainy day..it was really worth it!!It was a great to learn so much about the Costa Rican wildlife from Carlos our guide. Carlos explained to us how they try to help the abandoned wildlife to go back to the wild wherever possible. What a great learning experience for our 11 year old daughter (she loved it despite the spider monkey trying to get her hair) !!
I'm so glad that I read about Proyecto Asis on Tripadvisor, because my teenaged son and I loved it. We spent a few hours with seven others in a group tour with Carlos. He educated all of us on the many ways that the animals end up at the refuge, most commonly due to the stupidity of humans. They have a straightforward set-up at the refuge; no frills, but solidly constructed pens for the animals. They focus on rehabilitation and release when possible. Our small group helped feed the animals after the tour, and enjoyed lemonade, coffee and fruit among the hummingbirds before getting to work with the animals' food preparation. It was such a thrill for my son and the other kids, especially to be able to be in the parrots' cage while feeding them, as well as to hand-feed the monkeys. They do a great job here - so glad to have come!
We did the volunteering as well as the tour, and I could not possibly imagine a better thing to do in this country. When going to La Fortuna, I definitely recommend that- no matter what- you should go here. Our guide, Carlos, was very informative and he seemed incredibly honest about the work they do here at Proyecto Asis. Saving the animals is their priority, and it's obvious that the tours are just what they do to make a profit. Without the tours, they wouldn't have the funds to pay their workers or feed the animals. I wish I could volunteer for longer, because this place was such an amazing experience for everyone going. When volunteering, you get to feed all of the animals they have there, and prepare the food(cut up fruit, corn, etc.). While on the tour, you can have some one-on-one contact with Jessica, a monkey who will hold your hand(if you have long hair, she may try to pull you into the cage- which she can't do but is super funny). The only thing I must mention to anybody planning to go here is that THESE ANIMALS ARE NOT DOMESTICATED, which also means that they do not have a routine set of animals that will consistently be here. It's not a zoo, so you will see whichever animals they rescued before that time. So, if you expect too much- a sloth, for example- don't be disappointed if they don't have one there. They are a true rescue organization, not a zoo, and that is the way it should be.
A great place to visit and volunteer. They do great things here. Was extremely informative about the Costa Rican wildlife. Very good tour guide. BRING YOUR BUG SPRAY!! Highly recommend!
We spent a wonderful afternoon at Proyecto Asis. Carlos, our guide, was knowledgable, fun and kept everyone in the group, kids and adults alike, engaged. Would highly recommend the volunteering part at the end of the tour. That was the highlight! We got to feed the monkeys! I don't know who loved it more, me or my 10 year old!
Definitely the place to visit in Costa Rica. We took the 3 hous tour where you feed the animals and didn't regret it! Our guide was sooo nice, he really liked his job and explained us a lot of things regarding Costa Rican wildlife. There was interaction between animals and visitors. The volunteering is such a good experience for families.
My second time to Proyecto Asis and I was surprised and happy to see even more improvements made. Their dedication to animal rehabilitation and welfare, paired with a commitment to education on animals is clear in everything they do. Great experience.
Hola Des L,We want to thank you for attending our tour that helps us to continue on this important mission. In fact, many pictures are from people who visited long time ago and by that time people had somehow a different experience. However, because of the welfare of the animals and also that they grow and become stronger, things have changed a little bit. Thanks for your support and review.Regards, - Proyecto Asis staff
