We just came back from a beautiful morning ride with El Pinto. The horses looked amazing, listen very well and you can see how much love and efford Marvin puts in taking care of them. He has a lot of respect for his animals and the area. I'm an experienced rider, so he let me go for a good run two times. My partner just knows the basics, so they followed me on an easier tempo. Marvin was very responsible, he knew exactly what was best for us.If you are a horse lover and/or you want to see the beautiful country side: do not hesitate to take a ride with El Pinto!!
Everything said about Marvin and his horses is true! We had a wonderful morning with a great guy and the best trail horses I've ever ridden! I'm an experienced rider, but have never ridden horses without a bit (in their mouth) before! They were only wearing harnesses. These were the best trained horses I've ever ridden. You basically just had to "think" what/where you wanted to go and they went! My daughter and I wanted to canter and we were allowed to go on ahead while Marvin and his horse stayed back and just walked with my husband. What a rush and so nice to feel the freedom! The varied scenery was beautiful including a nice stop in the cool jungle at a stream for the horses to drink and a snack of pineapple. We had trouble finding Marvin's phone #, but booked just him at Zuma Tours in town.
My girlfriend and I had lovely experience with Marvin and his horses as we toured around the scenic countryside outside Montezuma. He was easy to coordinate with and sent a driver to retrieve us from our hotel who brought us directly to the start of the tour. Marvin was there waiting, casually grazing his horses just next to a local grocer. With pineapple and water in hand, he loaded us onto our horses and off we rode. It quickly became clear that Marvin had a very deep love for his horses, Costa Rica, and the nature surrounding us. We chatted the entire time about Costa Rican history and politics including the humane treatment of animals and all the various uses of coconut milk. Marvin grew up riding horses, and it was clear from the very beginning just how comfortable he was with his animals and how much he cared for them, emphasizing his commitment to resting them appropriately after each ride. Our ride took us through jungle, a small stream, lavender fields, and beautiful views of the mountains. This was truly a highlight from our trip. The horses, Pinto, Cookie, Niso and Romeo are quite the crew of charmers! Don't miss out on this fantastic experience!
Our ride with Marvin and his horses was very nice. Marvin is fluent in English, which was nice so that we could converse with him. Things I liked about this ride in comparison to others in Costa Rica: his horses had no evidence of ticks or other illness/skin conditions; Marvin's tours are private (he will not add one other person into your tour group just to fill in a spot to make himself more money, for example); Marvin kept us going at a slow, leisurely pace whereas other guides had the horses run/gallop part of the time (that was scary, and they did it even though I expressed that I did NOT want to run/gallop and that everyone in our party was inexperienced); and Marvin runs his own operation (he's the only guide and has a limited number of horses), so maybe that's why he seems to care a bit more about his horses. I guess one can book a ride with Marvin through other tour operators, but I recommend booking directly with Marvin. That way, maybe Marvin gets a little more money? At the very least, there is no reason to pay more for a tour just so a middle man can receive a share. We would definitely go riding with Marvin and his beautiful, healthy horses again.
This is our third year spending Christmas week in Montezuma, and each year we have ridden with Marvin. He is incredibly warm, easygoing and most-importantly, takes GREAT care of his horses and his guest riders. Friends with seemingly everyone in the area, Marvin has access to miles of trails across farm, field, beach and forest, and he will take you to some of the best views in Costa Rica. Having lived in the USA for years, his English is fluent, and he is a gentleman philosopher and ecologist which makes the afternoon even more fun. Our family ranges from 12-73 and beginner to advanced riders, and every one of us had a great, comfortable ride. Our kids all consider him a Costa Rican friend and wouldn't miss an afternoon with him each year. The horses are all lovely, with calm, friendly dispositions. Beach babies, if you are staying in Montezuma, DONT go for a broiling trudge down the beach on sad horses, just get in touch with Marvin and he'll send a cab for you and bring you to the shady hills (ten minutes away) for a glimpse of the other Costa Rica on happy, healthy, well-loved ponies. NOTE THAT MARVIN BOOKS HIS OWN RIDES - THE HOTELS DO NOT BOOK FOR HIM, SO EVEN IF THEY TELL YOU IT'S EL PINTO, IT IS MOST DECIDEDLY NOT.
It made me curious looking over the reviews for this adventure: the OWNER was mentioned in the first sentence of almost every review. The ride, scenery even the horses came after the mention of Marvin. After a short time with Marvin we could easily see why. This gentleman is so great to be around with his knowledge of Costa Rican history, local flora and fauna and the love he has for his horses. We almost forgot we were having the best ride of our lives...almost. The horses we rode were so well mannered (cookie and Alma....I'm horrible with names) and gentle while still easily managed while taking in the views and not fully paying attention to the fact youre supposed to be operation the reins. We had a great time that a review can't to justice to. Do yourself a favor, see this country in a way not many can or will bother to, get in touch with Marvin and savor the adventure! Pura Vida!!!
We made a visit to Montezuma - loved this little town and while having a little bite to eat booked a tour for a horseback ride- my boyfriend had wanted to make my 50th a special day and knew how much I had wanted to ride a horse while in Costa Rica. Initially I had hoped it would be on a beach, well my view of where the best place to ride has been forever changed! Marvin, our guide and owner of El Pinto, took us up into the forest; to the tops of the mountains and down to a serene river bank. The views were breathtaking; a neverending display of rolling green lush mountain tops .....the trail down to the river under the canopies was spectacular sights and sounds have marked themselves pemanently in my mind... Butterflies the size of my hand! This is a ride I will never forget - it was beyond what I had expected - I recommend this to anyone! Marvin is really genuine and will take any experience of rider and give them the ride/tour of a lifetime :) we will be back!!! Ola-VidaJolanta and Chris
In agreement with all the wonderful reviews. Also... Make sure you ask for Marvin! If he's not your guide, you're not riding with El Pinto. His horses are well-trained and wonderfully cared for. Not sure what was the best part of the day: riding in the beautiful hills or getting to know Marvin, a kind and knowledgable guide.
What an amazing experience. Our guide Marvin was extremely helpful, professional and friendly. My gf and I did the evening trip. Riding up and down the trail can be intimidating but if you listen to your guide and trust the horse, you will be fine. Thank you again Marvin!!- John and Nicole (NYC)
My wife and I went for an afternoon ride on the Cabuya beach. It was very romantic and we genuinely had a great time with our guide, Marvin. We had already done horseback riding before and this was one of the funnest we ever did. Marvin is a lot of fun, knows so much about the wildlife and the history of Costa Rica and speaks of it with great passion. If you love horses and animals in general, go with El Pinto. Marvin loves his horses and it shows, they were the most healthy looking horses we saw in the whole country and they are very obedient, easy to ride. Thanks Marvin, if we ever go back, we will go on a different tour for sure!
