This is a complete change from Granada and surrounding area. It should be obvious, but for some it's not, so here goes: This is a CLOUD FOREST. It's at a higher elevation and and so it is cold and wet and even rainy. Your shorts and sandals are not appropriate. At all. Ever. Hiking fast will not keep you warm and you'll miss anything you might otherwise spot. Which brings up another point: you most likely will see nothing. I don't mean just no birds or animals, I mean the craters themselves, even hiking right to it or along it. Hike the rim(s) for the peace and beauty and experience alone and if you're lucky enough that the winds blow the right way so that you see a crater, count it as a bonus. And don't waste time and energy trying to save a few bucks by not taking the trucks up to the ranger station---it's too steep and will take too long. Be prepared for what you really have to do or stay in Granada and look at Mombacho from there.
We booked a tour with Cafe Las Flores to hike at the top of Mombacho Volcano. The tour cost $25 per person. They brought us in a truck to the top on what is probably the steepest road I have ever been on. I would not recommend attempting to walk to the top. Our guide took us around the Crater Trail. It was a very easy trail with some great views of Granada and Lake Nicaragua. The trail only took us about an hour and that was with frequent stopping. We did not see much wildlife. Though the guide was very nice, I don't feel like we really needed one for that hike. I think we could have perhaps found a different ride to the top for less than the $50 we paid for the two of us, but aside the price, I was happy with our tour.
Panoramic views of craters and landscape beyond. If you've only seen tropical plants like begonias, ageratum, orchids as house plants go see 'em there in their natural habitat! Our guide Alberto was knowledgeable and spoke English beautifully.
This was my fourth visit, last visit poor thought I'd try it again. No more. Poor service. Overcooked food. Overpriced for Local cuisine!!
Erick Tours arranged another winner. Great tour guide and breathtaking views. A wow cloud forest experience
We had the best time taking a private tour of the Mombacho Volcano. It was very family friendly for my seven year old daughter.
This ended up being an unexpected highlight! You can take a bus from Masaya or Granada to Empalme de Guancaste, then you can walk (30min) or tuk-tuk like we did to the entrance of the park. The entrance fee is a bit steep (5$/person, 20$/person with transport) so we decided to walk; bad idea! It was a steady 45 degree nonstop incline (but on asphlat road) and we ended up getting a ride from the shuttle instead. Once we got to the top, they explained the different trails you can do (some must be done with guide) and that's where the fun began. It was a very easy trail, not too muddy, but allowed us beautiful views inside the crater, then forest surronding it, a tunnel formed by it's eruption then of the valley around the volcano. We both loved it!! Having these views with little effort; totally awesome!
The short hike is beautiful and on the easier level. If you have it in you to hike the longer route to the top lookout, it is really beautiful! But LOTS of stairs!
as the name implies it was very cloudy and windy when we got there and really couldn't see anything . lucky for us the clouds cleared and we got a great view of the lake. but be aware you have to wait for the next bus ride down and there isn't a lot to do after your hike. The bus ride is fun in it self
It was windier and colder than expected, but so beautiful and interesting to see all the flora, watch the clouds blow by, see the views of Granada and the Islets, discover heat vents and learn about the volcano's history.
