it was interesting that most of the information that I could find about the Cathedral centred on the fat that you could go on up to the roof and walk around up there. Most of the descriptions missed the fact that the inside is beautiful. A marked departure from most Latin American churches in that it was more subdued in its religious decorations; more simple, less ornate. The giant sized paintings depicting the stations of the cross were phenomenal! Worth the visit for those alone. And, oh yeah, the views from on top of the Cathedral ( you are only up maybe 40 feet) are great - from there you can see the several of the nearby volcanoes and at least a half dozen beautiful churches.

This is supposedly the largest cathedral in Central America and it looks it but it desperately needs refurbishing especially on the exterior which is in a terrible state. The interior is cavernous and the alter is spectacular. You can even go out and wander about the roof which is most unusual and gives a good view of the town.

Who doesn't like cathedrals. I travel to different countries and make sure that I visit their cathedral. Beautiful as I see it on picture. Just love the architecture.

We visited the Basilica after the Leon Botanical Gardens (couldn't find gardens as a choice on Tripadvisor). Gardens very beautiful although they had suffered a severe storm the previous week and the Butterfly House had been destroyed. The Basilica is worth a visit, we went as an organised tour so entry was paid for. You gain access to the roof by narrow stone stairs. Once at the roof you have to remove footwear so you don't mark the pristine white roof. The views are worth it !!There is an entry on my list of Leon in Spain. This is an error !!The Leon I visited is in Nicaragua - sorry for mistake on my part !!!!

An amazing cathedral, beautiful inside and out. While it somewhat difficult to navigate (you buy your ticket around the backside of the building and enter on the side), make sure you visit the roof. It was one of the highlights of our Nicaraguan holiday!

If I'm not mistaken this was constructed in 1745...that in itself is worthy of awe. They are working on restoring this and it will definitely takes many years of effort but what a treasure. We looked at this and were taken back by the work and skill that was involved to creating this amazing structure. I'm not catholic but I can truly appreciate the skill and devotion needed to build such a beautiful work of art.We didn't take any tours...didn't realize they were available at the time...so there was no fee to enter the cathedral, but I understand there are tours of the upper floors and basement available. Supposedly there are secret passages/tunnels in the basement area.Just keep in mind that this is not just a tourist attraction...families still worship here so please show respect...gentlemen and ladies remember to remove your hats, no loud talking and flash photography on the works of art are prohibited.

I am not a religious person nor am I big on visiting something just so I could stay I saw it. To miss this will be a huge mistake. It. Is. Awesome! Check the rules before taking pics.

Main cathedral. Large imposing presence in the main square was you would expect for a cathedral in a Catholic country built centuries ago light airy serene interior, not at all extravagant. Free to enter. Yes, the roof is cleaner than the rest as work progresses, its not a trick of light.

Don't see Leon without seeing the Cathedral, and particularly by going up on the roof! View and perspective of the entire region.

Collected my ticket round the back of the weather worn Cathedral, $3 and walked back up the side to a small door. A man takes your ticket and you climb the stairs to the roof, a beautiful, brilliantly white series of domes and small towers. With shoes off the surface if amazingly cool to the touch given the tremendous heat of the Leon sun. Great views of the surrounding colonial rooftops and churches as well as the many volcanoes in the distance. Well worth it. When then exterior is painted it will look amazing. You need your sunglasses for going on the roof.

Beautiful, no cars or bikes allowed. It is quiet, there are lots of people and children running around. Great place to chill and people-watch. We come here almost every day to let our girls run around and play with other children on the plaza.

the basilica is in the process of being done up and is looking really good, you can go up on the roof which is a brilliant white, sunglasses needed, the view is fantasic. Also the paintings inside of the points of the cross are very moving. There is a small fee for the roof visit, the clock mechanism is British 1850 which you can see when on the roof.

We did the roof tour a year ago when you could only go out on part of it because of the renovation projection. This year, they're mostly done one the roof and we got to go out on most of it. Not to be missed!

Worth the stop if you are walking around town- it's the foundation of the town square. An enormous church, worth a walk inside and getting pictures outside.
