A popular but not crowded beach, patronised by locals as well as "Gringos" near Leon, Nicaragua. The black sandy beach is littered....but with sea shells!Arrive hear near sunset and watch the spectacular sunset and then dine in one of the nearby restaurants.A good way to relax after sightseeing in Leon.
Beautiful beach with some but not too many people, consisting of a nice mix of Nicaraguan and international visitors. Waves are good but not too big. Great to walk along the beach in the morning or evening. During mid day, some type of shade is needed, as well as sandals so as not to burn on the hot sand. Along the beach, there are plenty of small informal places to have a drink or a bite of food. The estuary is fun, trying to find the best way to wade/swim from one side the another.
Great waves, few people, a few bars/restaurants, some small hotels on beach, warm water. Even on the weekend, the beach was not swarming with herds of people. Watch it though, the sand can get burning hot.
While in Leon for 4 weeks I spent my beach weekends at the Lazy Turtle and Sol y Mar. Sleepy fishing village and the few Bars/restaurants serve up the local fish fresh and delicious.
4 Cordobas for a truck to the bus and 12 Cordobas to get to the beach (playa). I recommend playa roca, a black sand beach just a few steps from a restaurant and bar. Buses run until about 630pm or you can stay at the hostel for about 7US. I did not stay at the hostel so i can't speak on its' behalf. You will love this area!
Tour booked with lazy bones hostal. Half an hour drive from Leon. Were with only 4 people. Sunset boat tour in the mangroves. Saw some very beautiful birds. Nothing spectacular but was very nice. Need to have some luck if you want to see something spectacular in these kind of tours. Also went to see hatching of turtle eggs but we were unfortunately one day to early.
Great place out of Leon to come for a few hours and take in the wonderful sunsets. Quite a few places to get food and drink, and the surf is great fun.
Beautiful, very laid back beach a short bus ride away. There are some great little places to set up camp for the day. We come here with 2 kiddos regularly and always have a great time.
Our family spent an afternoon at Playa Las Penitas Beach. It is gorgeous! What we loved was the clean beach, we didn't see any trash or garbage at all. The kids loved collecting sea shells for the afternoon and loved how warm the water was. Also enjoyed the fact that it was fairly quiet, not crowds of people that you would usually find at other beaches. We walked the length of the beach and it wasn't too busy. I would recommend this beach to anyone as it is just lovely!
I took a taxi from Leon to spend the day at Las Penitas. I had spent several days there a couple of years ago and just loved it. Our day trip did not disappoint. We made Oro de Barco our home base. They could not have been more welcoming even though we were not overnight guests. They arranged our tour with a local fisherman to visit the mangroves and while we were on the tour they stored our gear in a locked room. We enjoyed lunch, the hammocks and the laid back atmosphere. When it was time to leave, they called a cab for our return trip to Leon. One of the highlights of our day is holding baby turtles that had just hatched and were being released that evening at dusk. Highly recommended for a day or several.
Beautiful beach almost to ourselves, but it is not easy to find a good hotel in the area. Had the best seafood pasta ever at Suyapa restaurant.
I was at Las Penitas two days in a row -- one, a regular day, the other a public holiday. I walked to Peneloya and back and thought the beach was great when no one was there. On the holiday, it was crowded and dirty because few people carry their trash out and there are no receptacles on the beach.
Go at around 5:00 to get view of a spectacular sunset and admire surfers trying to catch waves. Really nice beach.
The beach here is pristine and the sunsets are amazing. You will likely be hustled by kids selling necklaces and box trinkets made from shells and they won't go away but they are harmless. There are a few good places to eat as well
Whether you're wanting to try surfing or just like to have fun in manageable Pacific waves, this is a great beach. We spent four days here over Christmas and passed many happy hours in the sun and surf. Poneloya is the beach one over from Las Penitas, separated by a few rocks with a staircase sunk into them for easy passage. Not nearly as developed for tourists as I was anticipating, but that just made Las Penitas so much better for a chill holiday. Check out the kayak rental at Barco de Oro at the end of the road and go for a spin into the beautiful Reserva Natural around Isla de Juan Venado.
