Gommateshwara or Bahubali as it is known is a 1000 year old Jain pilgrimage center. It is around 12KMs from Channarayapatna and 2.5 hours drive from Bengaluru. It can be pretty difficult for aged people to accomplish the climb, which is of over 700 steps. The first 600 steps are of medium difficulty, but the last 50-100 steps are the most painfullest. Nobody is allowed to climb the holy hills wearing footwear but one can opt to wear socks to prevent the feet from burning. Atop the Vindhyagiri hill is the beautiful 80 ft tall statue of Bhagwan Bahubali. Please carry a pair of socks, water bottle, a hat or sun glasses that can come in handy to beat the heat & the scorching sun. There are good dhabas near Channarayapatna(CR Patna) which serve you some decent food.

An Impressive place, You have to climb up 600 steps to see the statue, huge and white. The view at the top was beautiful, you can see for miles.

The flight of stairs curving up to the top can be disheartening, but the climb is definitely worth it. Beautiful statues and amazing view from the top.

sravanbelagola is world renowned for the tallest monolith of mahaveera -an epitome of sacrifice and brotherhood.drive past lush coconut palms from channarayapatna to enter a little town of sravanbelagola,you can see the head of mahavira from a distance of 15 kms high above the hillock .clmbabout 650 steps to reach the top ,and you wil cherish the effort you took,there stands mahaveera ,sublime and a picture of total renunciation showering his blessingsgs and teachig to the world that all materialistic wealth is useless .love and universal brotherhood is the message .walk around and get your camers ready for a treat ,the kalyani is seen rom above .you can then visit the small shops and pick up some antiques and replicas for a deal

Visited this place long ago and this was my second visit last week. Lot of development has happened around the small town.The climb took about 40 minutes up and down hill took about 15 mins.Not a difficult climb. Carry a hat. The weather was good and not very warm. Once on top relax or meditate...its good.But when we went it was overcrowded because of holiday weekend and lot of tourists.A must visit on this sector on the way to Belur and Halebid or Chikkamagaluru.

The climb up is not all taht arduous, and you can catch your breath. The snacks and fruits in the little town are great.

Carry water with you. If you are too exhausted - take long breaks as the climb is really not much. Don't be overwhelmed -as the number of steps to the top is REALLY NOT MUCH AT ALL.

This place is considered one of the most pious pilgrimage destinations of Jains and devotees travel more than 1000km to seek blessings from Lord Bahubali.Its a 2 hours trek (max) to the top of the hill. There are steps carved into the hill to reach the statue and carriages available to carry people, up n down the hill, having difficulty walking (cost is max 1000 INR depending on weight).The statue stands upright with might. Its a peaceful destination with positive vibes circling around you. The temple on the top has statues of all tirthantakrs with Bahubaliji's being the grandest who is one of the tirthankars(holy saints) of Jain. The place offers architectural sights though not so fine but worth a watch.

I visited this place during December 2014. Since it was winter season, we did not feel much tired as we started to climb up Vindhyadri hill at 7.30 am. Approximately it takes around 2 hrs to climb up and down the hill. For aged and people who feel tough to climb, they offer Doli services for a fixed price. One is not supposed to climb the hill with footwear, however one can climb with socks. It is indeed amazing that we cannot see a glimpse of Lord Bahubali till we reach the top, an amazing architecture. Best time to visit this place is during winter. One can also try climbing Chandragiri hill to see mantaps in the memory of late thirthankaras. Don't forget to try hot Alu parathas at Suranga Jain Mess, very close to main gates of Vindhyadri hill. It is bit costly, but will be a different try!

Should not miss this place if you are visiting belur and halebeedu. Only issue is that there are no good hotels near this place. There is one hotel that was reasonable. So you wouldn’t starve if you miss having your meal before reaching there.

I enjoyed the walk up to the temple and statue. Even my sensitive bare feet had no problems with the steps because they were smooth. In addition to the huge statue, the temple has many interesting smaller carvings. Definitely worth the effort.
