If your journey started in Delhi then wrap up warm, the best seats in my opinion are on the right in the direction of travel. Rember you will be sitting on hard upright seats for some five hours. Anybody can be uncomfortable so plan ahead but keep hand baggage to a minimum. Loads of beautiful views so keep the camera handy. As the train makes stops it gives you the opportunity to stretch your legs, so for your trip take drinks, something warm and your camera.

The experience is unforgettable, the journey is bit long but one can decide to hop on or hop off mid way and enjoy the train ride.

My wife and myself were recently in a party of 40 with Great Railway Journeys booked on the lunchtime Kalka to Shimla "Toy Train". It was a wonderful experience with terrific views as we climbed winding around the mountains to the Shimla station at 7000 feet. Although it took about 5 hours to complete the journey it was not boring or tiring there was always something to look at and, of course, the various stops at stations en-route to allow descending trains pass added to our interest. We must have been a privileged bunch as we enjoyed the luxury car with armchair seats which reminded us of the Pullman cars of the Orient Express. To our delight on arrival at Shimla we were rewarded with the pleasure and elegance of the Cecil Oberoi hotelfor a three night stay.

what an amazing experience.. riding a little toy train passing through about 108 tunnels and climbing the shimla hills.just be sure to book the tickets well in advance.though bit long but not at all tiring ..you can enjoy the hills view during. as we had caught the morning 4 am train we were luckkyy enough to enjoy the complete sunrise view from our windows and sharing the lovely moment with one another. It ws trully a best part of entire trip.

This journey takes over 5 hours and is very cramped and uncomfortable but we were lucky with the weather and were able to get out at various stations to stretch our legs and use toilets there reserved for passengers or to buy snacks Be aware though there is little room for luggage and the toilets on the train are very basic.

Unfortunately our journey was in the rain and mist, and it took an hour longer than it should have done. The seats were quite basic - vinyl upholstered benches - there's not a lot of room (and all seats were occupied) and some of the windows leaked. The toilet (in each carriage) is a hole in the floor and there's no heating - it was snowing by the time we got to Shimla. We were glad to arrive. Having said all that, which is quite negative, the line is an engineering marvel, the views from the train are stunning and it's an experience you shouldn't miss. Take some food and water with you. But be aware, it's not luxurious and comfortable travel (though there is the Shivalik Express service - once a day? - which I understand has more comfortable carriages and a meal is served). You could just take the train for part of the journey and arrange onward travel by other means.

The carriages are crowded and crammed with luggage, seats hard and the toilets on board very basic but the journey and views from the windows are fabulous.

We took the train, the Himalayan Queen which is the first class train, from Shimla to Kalka on the first of March. The ride was painfully slow, freezing cold, and rather uncomfortable. There are no individual seat but benches that don't recline and your back and butt are sore after a few hours. We were also close to the bathroom and it stank pretty bad. Also keep in mind that the train is to/from Kalka and if you are going to Chandigarh you'll need to take an additional train (30 minutes). Yes, the views are nice and the ride has its charms but the views are no better than the ones in Shimla, Dharamsala or any other mountain town. Do yourself a favor and take the bus.

The Kalka Shimla railway is a narrow meter guage train which runs through 99 tunnels. The sight seeing is awesome as the train passes thru the narrow tracks. The rectangular boggies and the wooden seats make it altogether an amazing experience. I would suggest all traveling to Shimla to experience this awesome journey rather than opting to go by road.

I feel proud to say that i am a part of this historic journey. Kalka-shimla railway was built by Britisher's and has become a part of an era that is unique in its own sense. It has been accredited with the national heritage tag, and i would suggest everyone should travel on this route.

If you have even the slightest interest in trains, you will love this railway. From about 10.00 the station is a hive of activity and the is well worth watching. The full journey and return will take all day, so you should consider consulting the timetable beforehand. A shorter journey to Summerhill is manageable in half a day and is great fun. This is proper railway, the Toy Train tag being a misnomer. Make sure you have a ticket !
