They have the five rathas there which are places of interest around mahabalipuram. sadly they are not maintained well and if you one looking for architecture, you would be sad to see the condition of these places - too commercial
This mural drew me in and took my breath away. I cannot say enough positive things about what my eyes beheld. Fictional or factual in the storytelling, the rock face and surrounding area simply melted my heart. Please do take the time to visit the site!
There is NO mythological connection. A lot of things that you see around are the imaginations of the Artist or the King who got this done. This one takes you back to the Mahabharata and how it was a fiercely fought battle. You can hire a guide for all the monuments around. I guess 100 to 200 bucks should be good enough.
This is main attraction in Mahabalipuram. The long and heighted stone carving structure is aprox 1400 years old and protected by archeology survey of india. We were delighted to visit this place on 24.2.2015
Peace and quiet place at the early morning, nice curving in the rock ( dynasty PALLAVA & CHOLLA)Must see the rock ( butter bowls) and claims up to visit all the nice curving and have a fantastic view on Mahalapuram city.
It's a monolithic monument and very picture perfect place. It does reflect the Pallavas style and it's probably one of the most visited monuments in Mahabalipuram
There are so many beautifully carved figures on this vast rock panel. From the satirical yogi cat to the charming elephants, the whole surface writhes with naturalistic carvings and a quirky sense of humour.
beautiful carving on stone are like none other. Its carved in one huge stone. the intricate work is unbelievable, the statues are so expressive and they tell a story. The elephants stand out the most. Great way to tell history.
This monolithic wall in 3-D is a marvel for several reasons. One for the sheer scale of the undertaking and then for the intricate carving which date back 1400 years. Right next to the wall is a lovely garden with more rock formations to marvel at and an uncarved Boulder juxtaposed against a carved which give an example of the huge undertaking.
It's most interesting place in Mamallapuram, accessible free. It's unique artwork. In paid museum not so interesting.
Given it is a monolithic work it is amazing how lifelike the enitre thing looks. The sheer craft of creating something like this out of one single rock is just mind boggling.
Well....it was worth a short visit inside. this attraction is right next to the Krishna Butter ball park. it has fascinating sculptures and worth a stop by and spending some time. there is however not much for the kids to do here. and try and visit earlier in the day so that you can avoid the heat.
Good Place to Visit with the Mythology it connects to. Reminds of the Mahabharata Times. Took a local guide who could share some interesting info.. although in broken English.
Descriptions of this sight are overdone. It's a well executed work and old. Touts masquerading as 'guides' don't leave you alone to enjoy the sight. There is a road running in front of the rock which interferes with viewing this monument.
This is the best known attraction of Mahabalipuram. The structure was beautiful, with very clear carvings and lived up to our expectation. The structure was visible from the main road, however, there was no approach provided to go close to the structure. The structure provided good photo opportunity. The photos had to be taken from the road. The only problem was that the place was crowded and there were vehicles moving on the road. Nevertheless, good place to spend some time her, take photos and move on.
