Sankaku market is a small seafood market I went in Hokkaido so far, we went there in the morning before we leave Otaru to Sapporo. we order a crab at a store. around 25000 yen incl tax, the price is fair i think. the people are friendly in general and they speak some English but I guess it's because it's the attraction.we also order Abalone, scallop and oysters. they will ask you the way to cook and most of the seafood place they have a restaurant on the side so you don't have to worry to find a place.try in the morning so you can avoid too many tourists at the peak hour. by the way, this market is really closed to the JR train station, once you get off, leave the bus stop and make a left turn on the main street, it's just 50m away from there. worth to take a look and experience this
Sankaku market is a small market up the hill on the left side, less than 100 m from the Otaru JR Train Station. If you are a foreigner coming in for a day trip from Sapporo, the easiest and cheapest way to get here is to buy the 1-day Sapporo-Otaru Welcome pass from Sapporo JR Station or the Shin Chitose Airport JR Station. The pass gives you unlimited rides on the JR Train and the Sapporo Subway system for the day in case you want to go to the other stations like Otaru-Chikko. The market itself is quite small but compared to Nijo market and the Curb market in Sapporo, prices here are better and some of the items they sell here are not found in the other 2 markets. Most of the shops here allow you to order the seafood and they will cook it for you. We went into a shop called Takeda which we really liked. Prices wise, it is definitely cheaper than in Sapporo.
Went to nijo market, central wholesale market in Sapporo. The prices in this market are the lowest, unless u go to Hakodate morning market where the prices are better.
Most people would say Hakodate seafood is better. well for me Sankaku market is better compared. Maybe less commercial and less tourist. Although it is a smaller market, but seafood is really fresh. Location is also easy to find,it is towards the left side when you walk out of Otaru JR station. Just less than 5 min walk. When you entre the market most of the fish stalls are on the right side and restaurants on the left side. just look around to check which restaurance fits you. The prices are almost the same....just your feel of the ambience of restaurant since some have tatami seating. As usual we entered the restaurant with a decent number of locals. 4 of us had fresh uni (sea urchin), ebi sashimi style, bbq scallops, grilled Kinki fish (which is one of my fav) and mantis prawns. There were many prepacked fresh uni on sale. But we took the live ones. Tip: Before exploring Otaru, do drop by this market for breakfast or lunch, fill up your stomach for an energized walk.
Sankaku is a market with you go to - clean and selling with live seafood with restaurants as well to cook the live selections. How fresh can you get? It is a difficult alley to find if you do not get clear instruction. I will try my best here to show you the way. Walking out from JR station you have two choices to go. 1st way just to the traffic light in front and make a left, walking along the shops on the left. Keep walking till you see the 1st shop selling live crabs. Stop and look inside the shop. On the left you will see an alley sloping upwards - this is Sankaku Market. We tried the last shop on the right which has its own restaurants. In winter the restaurants are closed due to the slow business I suppose. We ordered the live Spider Crab at Y5000 per kilo inclusive of cooking. Queen crab is slightly cheaper. The big Clam BBQ are also very nice. There are so many options so go as a group to share and with a hungry stomach. We made this the last stop before departing from JR station so by then we were quite full so we just had crab and clam. The live abalone are very nice too. The shop owner of the last shop on the right is vey friendly. So if you walk all the way to the end and exit you will notice JR station is right in front of you below a flights of stairs. So from JR if you walk diagonally left and up a flight of stairs you can find the 2nd way to the Sankaku market. This is far better market than the others we visited. We stayed at the Dormy Inn Premium and frankly quite disappointed that the reception did not recommend such a good market with restaurant which is just across the hotel along the road just outside JR station and less than 10 minutes walk away.
On my second visit to Otaru, I decided to visit the Sankaku Market. Actually I walked right past the market and ended up about a quarter mile past when I stopped a school girl and asked her where the market was. She was nice enough to walk me back to the market. Once there I found live king crab, queen crab, and hairy crab, along with live scallops and shrimp in tanks. I was able to purchase two crab that they helped me send to relatives in Tokyo. The owner of the seafood shop also owns the Takeda restaurant, where I had lunch. The kaisen don(seafood topped on a large bowl of rice) was just 1300 yen, and consisted of several botan ebi(raw peony shrimp), several hotate(raw scallops),and lots of ikura(raw salmon roe). Mrs. Takeda brought in the live scallops and shrimp for my meal, and gave me a side dish of dried ika(squid). This is a must see when in Otaru.
