The aquarium was a highlight. The building housing the aquarium is amazing and there were lots of different species to see. There is the opportunity to feel some of the marine creatures and this was fascinating. Good place to take the kids but interesting for adults too.
Honestly I would say the aquarium itself is not very attractive. The aquarium is rather small and a bit old compared to ones in say Okinawa or Osaka. But what makes this marine park interesting is the shows especially the penguin parade. At periodic times during the day, the penguins will literally come out for a walk in the square in the park. You can get very close to the penguins which are extremely cute animals. I don't think this is done anywhere else in the world so especially if you are traveling with kids this will be a very fun experience.
This is a privately run park and the owner liked Denmark so much he designed it to resemble Danish castle and other buildings. Lots of Danish items on display including a replica of the Mermaid in the Danish harbor. The penquin walk is interesting – go early and squat on your spot behind the white line – don’t pet the penquins as the handlers will warn you that human germs can harm the animals. Narration only done in Japanese. Rest of show/displays are similar to other aquatic parks.
The park is quite small and you get the usual performances from seals and dolphins. Nothing out of the ordinary. It may be quite good for kids as there are sections where you can touch the sea stars etc. For adults it's nothing new and probably better to see the wild life in its own habitat (e.g. Phillip Island Victoria).
. . . and that is the coral displays in the aquarium tanks were one of the best I've seen in Japan. I say this now, after having been to maybe 40 aquariums throughout the country. Very colorfull with excellent diversity, with water that was crystal clear. I visited the aquarium back in 2002 or so, so I don't know if it's the same now. I don't think a penguin show was offered at the time. I always say it's worth visiting every aquarium, no matter how small or dinky they may seem, for these little surprises.
I enjoyed the aquarium with many interesting marine spices. My only concern is the penguin parade...according to our tour guide that the parade operates year long, which means these poor babies have to walk on hot days on hot brick path, when the temperature is not appropriate for them to perform (knowing where they are naturely from!). I do hope when we enjoy their lovely entertainment, they appreciate our love to them, too.
The Amusement part was closed in Jan when we played a visit to it. The marine museum is fine but it would never overwhelm you if you have been to museums in the States or the Okinawa one. Yet it is still a bargain place nearest to Hakodate, south of Hokkaido, for the closest contact with penguins! We thought it was like a rare place and we were the only guests to the museum at around 9:30am, but we were wrong. We were too early comparing to visitors of the package tours from Taiwan and HK! When we were hanging around the museum, hardly seeing any persons around us, we left it by around 10:50am to found it was a mistake! We shall have left earlier and got a nice spot along the path of the penguin's parade! Suddenly, a park accommodating two (as we had formerly thought) become one that crowded with nearly hundred along the path!It last for about 20 minutes from the time the staff walked the penguin from their home to the final spot, explaining in Japanese about the habit of the penguin (we assumed it was, as we could not tell). Then, another 15 minutes for the penguins to walk back along the same path. So, we didn't really miss much.. but it was like the path was always packed with people and you really had to get a good sense to find a spot that favor photo taking, or perhaps their chances of getting close to you.Certain penguins were particularly interested in the camera strip hanging down the neck of visitors, or anything that look string like hanging down from the visitors' clothes.. And some would like to give you a SHxT when you wanted to hug them! NO jokes! Really shXtting while you were trying to get closer to some.. so be ware of the fun shooting with them or you'd be sorry for the loss of your brand-new boots.
This aquarium is a relatively small one if you have been to the ones in HK, Singapore or others, but the best part of the aquarium is the penguin parade. They have a few types of penguin and they walk along the path even the baby ones that's full of fur. They're relatively guided but they'll still walk around biting things so you gotta be careful. Noboribetsu doesn't' have much to do so I'd say this aquarium is worth a visit on the day that you get into the area.
Considered the size of the park and what they offered were not bad at all. A good introduction of marine life to your children and good shows from the dolphins, sea lions, and penguins. Overlooked this place if you are veteran world renowned marine park goer,
While it isn't a Sea World type marine park, what it lacks in grand commercialism it makes up for with loads of charm. An emphasis on rare, interesting fish coupled with some cute staples (dolphins , sea lions) makes it a fun day out. Particularly heart stopping is the long escalator ride above a giant shark tank, almost unbelievable due to the lack of safety barriers. One slip and, bye! Shark bait.
It's really a small aquarium and nothing much to see. If you have been to other marine parks, then this place will not appeal to you. The place is pretty deserted as well as I don't see many people around.
Freezing cold as it was a windy day. Really enjoyed the penguin march as it wasn't crowded (unlike the Asahikawa zoo!!). The park is quite small and entrance fee is quite expensive. We took the taxi to and from our onsen resort so the visit was extra costly for us.
I'd recommend this park. OK, really just about everything in the park you can find better and bigger somewhere else if you look, but overall it was a pleasant, nice park. The penguin parade was a unique experience. The aquarium was surprisingly high quality. The foreign tourist 2-park ticket gets you in this and one other of two parks (Bear Park or Historical Village) for 3000 Yen. Not bad for Japan.Easy walk from JR station. Get to the animal shows early if there are lots of tourist buses on site.IF you rush, you can see everything except the kiddie rides in two hours or so...but we took our time.
