I visited there in winter and felt very cold. It let me to imagine prison's harsh moment. The architecture is nice and good atmosphere to get the feeling. If your time is available, try the prison meal in canteen. It is a good experience to feel prison's life. It is recommended.

There are wax figurines together with the different types of prison facilities exhibited in this museum.

Alcatraz of japan. We rented a car in abashiri and visited this place by Gps and was easy to find. And there is a bus going to the museum as well for those who are not driving.

It took a bit of finding by car but worth the effort. The prison museum is a site where original buildings of the courthouse, prison buildings and storehouses and living quarters and the prison barracks and cells themselves were assembled.Diorama figures are on display throughout the museum to bring life to and provide some insight to the activities in each of the buildings.I don't know how they survived the cruel winters here and most were engaged on road building which extracted a heavy toll on the number of prisoners. Some of the storage buildings were interesting - the soy sauce vats and the pickle vats! And the pickles that they produced were said to be top class. The cells which were arranged in five radial barracks were something of an architectural masterpiece.Well worth a visit.

The Alcatraz of Japan, this has is a reconstruction of the original prison transporting many of the original buildings to the new site. There are plenty of English signs at each of the attractions and I did not notice many grammatical errors and certainly much more extensive than the English brochure that you receive at the entrance. There is also a theatre recreating the construction of the road that originally lead to the founding of the prison. These run every 10 minutes and the English version is at 10 past the hour.Although the site could be within walking distance of the station there are buses that run back and forth and taxi's can also be called. All together a very interesting museum with plenty to see.

Abashiri is a famous or notorious place for the Japanese Alcatrazz equivalent Abashiri Jail where many Yakuza-related movies have been played and abuse labour practices have been known in the past. But we learned many different aspects, for example their contribution to build up main roads in Hokkaido which accelerated the development, new agriculture schemes which also contributedto the rapid development of Japan agriculture in the rest of Hokkaido as well as other places. One thing we regretted was the limitation of our time, just an hour before the closure, too short to look around everything. You should take at least 2 hours to learn more and fully about the jail.We could not try but the "Kangoku meal" or "prisoner's meal" looks very interesting and other many visitors like it.

Abashiri Kangoku Museum or simply the Abashiri Prison Museum is a worthwhile visit if you're in town. The nearby modern-day and operational Abashiri Prison was the original site of the buildings now housed at the Prison Museum. They have kept certain original elements of the old Prison along with well done reconstructions. The museum is open air and sits on a relatively large site which involves a fair amount of strolling around to see everything - set aside at least 1 to 2 hours. There is an indoor exhibition area with interactive displays and a special cinema. Visiting the prison, which was sadly built to house political prisoners who were then used for hard labour, really made you realise the hardships of the past and the importance of a fair and transparent democracy and justice system. It also challenges one to think about how society should treat prisoners no matter how serious their acts.

Besides being a relocated/rebuild prison, this place is thoroughly educational. The history of the place, the development of Hokkaido East, the convicts and what they were put through, the way of life, technology and farming methods of that period...these all came to light for visitors which makes this visit well worth its while. We spent 2 hours here and enjoyed it.

We started the tour with a half-hearted expectation. But the awesome museum's displays with informative explanations changed our views totally as we proceeded from each recommended stations. My 9 and 10 year-old kids enjoyed ourselves throughout the 1-1/2 hour leisure walk in the tranquil environment. Definitely must-go venue. However, be prepared that it can be pretty daunting for some people as some exhibits may be quite dark and unnerving.

Is nice to scroll to the what the inmates life is during the meji period. The structure some is a reproduction and is restored. I personally think it lost the true feel.

We had no idea what to expect and we arrived there while it was snowing pretty heavily. And wow.... how anyone survived.... unimaginable. This is a must see and it's true that the name doesn't make one instantly want to go. We were, in fact, about to skip it. Oh so glad that we did not! We rushed about a bit (had about 45 mins) because we had limited time, but we are very very glad we did. Absolutely fascinating.
