In the last 300 years, Bacarra has had multiple earthquakes so St Andrew the Apostle Catholic Church is not just a declared Filipino national treasure but a partly reconstructed survivor to boot. The 30 year old restoration used building materials indistinguishable from the original to a layman's eye like mine. The church has a simple altar while a large statue of Christ is in the church grounds in front of the main entrance. The church is part of a wonderful complex of a partly destroyed belltower and a very good small musuem in what may once have been the convent.Bacarra is known for producing vocations to the Catholic priesthood and has been dubbed 'Vatican City of the Philippines' in recognition. The small deviation to Bacarra off the national highway is a must for anyone travelling to or from Saud Beach or Blue Lagoon at Pagudpud. There are clean public toilets, as usual lacking toilet paper, opposite while there was also a young man selling delicious peanuts for the usual P10 a small paper chute type bag.

If you are going to the beaches of Pagudpud from Laoag, I suggest you go the route Bacarra (Bacarra Church) – Pasuquin (Pasuquin Bakery) - Burgos (Burgos Lighthouse) – Bangui (Bangui Windmills) - Pagudpod.Bacarra Church should be included in your itinerary as the church is a declared national cultural treasure. The oldies and I also love the pattern of the tiles used in the interior of the church. We understand it is still the original tiles from when the church was first built. Too bad we didn’t know there’s a museum supposed to be housed in the convent. Maybe next time!

This little town is cute, and clearly treasures its church.
