From up here you have some really stunning views across the city and the sea. The site itself is not very well maintained. The museum part is OK but not great.
We were visiting by taxi from our casa and this fort was on our list of places to go. We arrived just before noon on a hot and breathless day. We came in the fort and kept turning left until we covered every nick and cranny of the fort. From the top of the wall to the almost sea level platform below the fort. It was a few hours of walking AN INCREDIBLE number of stair steps and a very very enjoyable view from every level. The information is uni-lingual Spanish and my Spanish is at best poor, my wife is a LITTLE bit better but we able to get the basics of history. We were very happy with our time spent at the fort. The path up to the fort is lined by locals selling everything from cutwork lace to the standard made in China trinkets on sale everywhere. Take water with you and lots of space on your memory sticks, the view is incredible.
Good attraction for history buffs. As fortresses go, it is quite beautiful and the multiple levels provide different perspectives of the surrounding region, though it is a long way down to the lowest level. Great views of the entire region from the top. It gets very hot, so early morning is the best time to visit to avoid the high temps. For the views alone, it is well worth visiting. If you want to take photos you have to pay 5CUC for the privilege. There are lots of souvenir vendors outside, but you can get better deals in the historic district of Santiago de Cuba.
Good views, good interpretation boards (tho' all in Spanish) a grand iguana and several other much smaller reptiles, some with spiral tails
I'm not into history, so I just walked through this place quickly and walked back to the bus. There is no english on the signs or exhibits, so if this is your thing, hope your tour guide has been enlightened.
I visited this site as part of an organized tour. The castle has been well preserved since its original construction in 1637. Its well worth seeing colonial spanish architecture and walking through the Pirate museum. The chapel and the jails below are a must see aswell. I've posted some additional photos on my blog re: this site and others in Santiago De Cuba. http://planetblueadventure.com/2015/02/06/inside-cuba-cienfuegos-and-santiago
the history, the structure and architecture. The history that lies within, you can see it. the scenery where it is set... amazing view.
Tourist trap. Broken-down hand-rails over centuries-worn stone stairs. Pay for the privilege of taking photos of the view.
I have been to all 4 El Morro's - Habana, Santiago, San Juan, Puerto Rico and Florida and the view from Santiago's El Morro are most impressive. ALso, you must dine in the restaurant the food is most delicious and they a remembrance to John Lennon who was there years before. El Morro is breathtaking and you must come, relax take in the beautiful view and feel the peace :-)
I visited as part of an organised tour of Cuba, and therefore didn't have as much time here as I'd have liked. There is a small museum mainly devoted to pirates of the Caribbean - including Sir Francis Drake, who I have to admit I have never thought of as a pirate though I guess he was!! There are lots of souvenir stands outside, and also a restaurant - also with stunning views - that would have been a nice place to have lunch if we'd had time. Note that there are lots of steep steps in the castle which might be a problem for the less mobile.
The view, everything, from the tour ladies who gave me some interesting stories. Although some may try to hit you up something, they do it nicely. You can zcore some travel brochere shote and framers for freinds even if your a rookie, take your time and take in some angles, lay on the grass and shoot up (nothing will bite you, shake it up, enough bla picture like old home movies.
Partially renovated, nice view of the bay, city and the airport. And of course the sea :)Bring plenty of water though...
Stunning location and vista of the Caribbean. Makes a great half day trip from the city. We met some interesting local artists selling sculpture.
