We really enjoyed our 3 nights in Vedado. The area is alot more authentic Cuba then old Havana and we felt very safe.Lots of good restaurants in the area. Transportation is not a issue as there are plenty of old car taxi's going by all the time.We stayed in an excellent apartment for 35cuc on the 17 floor with wonderful views, Casa Ada.If you are thinking of staying outside of the resorts then Vedado is a great location.
Our Casa particular was in Vedado on la agenda de los presidentes and calle 13. We could walk to the Malecon and to the Plaza de la revolution. Large avenue, nice little villas (although most in need of repairs), some nice paladars and in general quieter than Havana Vieja.
This part of Havana is situated between Old Havana / Habana Vieja in the east and newer part Miramar to the west, which is separated by a tunnel. The Malecon- embankment which is nice promenade path along the ocean, goes whole the way arounf Vedado, and the most popular carismatical hotels of Havana Nacional de Cuba and Habana Libre are also situated here. A best sightseeing- walks are from Malecon along Prado avenue to Parque Central and Capitolio Nacional, and then from Parque Central to Museum of Revolution or along Calle Obispo. The Revolution Square with Jose Marti Monument is also situated in Vedado, further to the south. This part of the city must to be seen for complete picture of Havana. As some inconveniences can be mentioned lots of tourists, lots of people wanting to sell something to you, lots of old 50s cars and much pollution in the air.
Nice neighborhood for those who enjoy a more 1930,40s,50s buildings. Good area for nightlife,restaurants,Banks,Shopping,Car/Hotel reservations. Hotel Habana libre, Hotel Nacional, Capri hotel all in this area
It is primarily residential neighbourhoods that are great to stay at some very good Casa Particulares. I stayed at Mylena and Otto's which was a fantastic experience with breakfast for $35 CUC's and worth every penny! Just three blocks south of Calle 23 below 20 and calle 18.One of the very good Paladars I highly recommend is El Cocinero., located at Calle 26 between 11 y 13. Food is fantastic and the patio we sat on has a very romantic atmosphere with white led lights strung along branches of some large trees. I had a lamb curry for 15 CUC's that was filling and delicious. My guests had a pasta and a beef tenderloin which both loved. The mains were only 12 CUC's .we had an excellent bottle of cab Sauvignon/Shiraz from Chile called Santa digna made by Michael Torres. 28 CUC'sAfter dinner we went up to the very hip rooftop for dessert and some drinks. Loved the music, the lighting, and the great mix of young Cuban elite and travellers.I didn't go but within the same large building is Fabrica de Arte is a popular club to go dancing! Not sure what the cover is for entry.
It's a nice area, a good distance from the old town so much less hassle. Some lovely old buildings and loads of classic American cars. I'd recommend a trip in a CoCo taxi too! There is a lovely restaurant just up the road from Hotel Nacional, called Havana's 21. Can't see it listed on Trip Advisor but really worth a visit.
Walking along the streets in vedado is not the time well spent in Havana. While there are few streets (even avenues) that offer nice views on renovated colonial villas, hotels and skyscrapers, most of the streets show the half ruined old buildings that no one is taking care for, but one can see that many people are still living in them. I was wondering if the inhabitants even realise the danger of those old worn out building they are living in. This is surely one of bad places to be in Havana.
Did a tour of this area in an old car with an English speaking driver. The best place to eat in Vedado is Cafe Laurent. Check it out you won't be disappointed.
I have been around Vedado where going to FOCSA building where you can enjoy a view of all the city from the highest floor as well as sitting at the restaurant or bar depending on your budget. I have later walk from Vedado to malecon and I found there are lots of food markets you can visit if curious. I discovered a new way of transportation while being here ! The Cubans call it ALMENDRADO or something similar to that, and its a kind of shared taxi , generally done by american cars that are of green color. They are amazingly cheap, 1 CUC is already too much, the thing is that you have to follow a designed journey as they were buses. You can use them to return to Old Havana while being in Vedado ! Its a pitty Fabrica Nacional was close and will be closed until february because it was one of my targets to visit in Vedado as well !
We stayed in Verdadao but do get out annd see the wonderful architecture and 'grand homes' of ther past quite different to the Old Havana. Good jazz and restaurants (I will review elsewhere)
We were on a private classic car tour that we had booked by ourselves through Havana Journeys.com Our tour guide took us to this restaurant for lunch. Great place to eat, you get lots of food but it is not cheap, however the quality is very good and so is the service. The chicken was so yummy!!! If you are polite, we suggest you buy your driver and guide lunch too, they are working hard for you. They can sit with you and tell you more about the city and many interesting things you wont find in a tour book. We totally recommend this place to eat and please look into booking a private tour through Havana Journeys.com. You wont regret this tour, you tell them what you want to see and do and they personalize the tour to you liking. You get picked up at your hotel in a classic car that has A/C and they driver and guide takes you around for the whole day to see the sites and it is cheap, cheap. It was the best day we had on our whole trip to Varadero to spend a day being toured around Havana, taken around to all the sites and the mall with in a great old classic private car and with a guide. Amazing Fun!! if you book this tour ask for Harry the guide, he is amazing, well educated and has good English, was a blast and totally safe.M and G from Canada
Near revolution square this is interesting, with flags and statues, it's also where the people gather for concerts, to see the pope etc and to celebrate the revolution
This is just a nice place to go. it is different from the Old City, but also very nice. The university, the great square, are all fascinating.
Off the beaten track and away from tourist zones lies Vedado. Beautiful area of Havana well woth exploring.
This is among the most beautiful areas in Havana, the buildings are mainly from the 1900 on with a french style, lots of green areas and wide streets, it is cleaner that other parts of Havana.
