Located in the Altos de Chavon Village, this was a such a letdown. You entered the school went into a back room where they were weaving the fabric to make blankets. There were two people in the room, one working the loom and the other doing the actual weaving. Upon exiting, another person came and sat at the front door. Definitely nothing like Parsons schools of design..in fact not much of a design school period.
The Altos de Chavon is a beautiful replica of an Italian village. The views of the Chavon River are outstanding!Lovely artists' shops and boutiques plus restaurants.
Likes:the ancient Santo Domingo, the stores, people were nice everywhereCons: a noisy, old bus (noisy engine, everything was shaking inside etc)
Want to study art? It doesn't get any better. Wonderful 1976 stone reproduction of quaint Italian village. Get creative and get inspired!
Great places to unwine and relax, wallk and enjoy the great scenery!! Food is a little expensive, but well worth it!!
We went on a private tour to Altos de Chavon area, not to the School of Design itself. The views of the river gorge, the gardens and the ancient-looking buildings, amphiteater and other monuments are very pretty, all very well kept. Be aware that if you are staying at a hotel in the La Romana-Bayahibe area, if your hotel requests it by email Altos the Chavon tickets will only be $5 per person, instead of the normal $25. Children are free.
We visited with a cruise ship group. There was not a lot of activity, the stay was too long and the museum presentations were not interesting.
This school is for students that are from other countries that want to learn the art and cannot afford it. They survive on donations from rich people
