I loved climbing this mountain. I am a 59 yr old woman and was travelling on my own and although a guide is not necessary for this climb I very much enjoyed having Juan (motoconcho driver and guide) climb this mountain with me. There was a light rain overnight before the climb and some places were quite slippery as well as lots of slippery rocks. Juan went beyond his duty as a guide and helped me in those slippery spots by giving me a supporting hand making the climb easier. It is not an easy climb and will take approx. 5 to 6 hours total (Well if you are in your 20's you will do it in much less time!!!)with a sort break at the top. There are great views along the way as well as at the top. Bring water and snacks. I also hired Juan a 2nd day for a ride and guide from Jarabacoa to entrance of Pico Duarte trail and we did a short walk in the National Park. This area of the Dominican is beautiful. If you like nature don't miss Jarabacoa. The guides phone number is 809-630-4303 he does both motoconcho driver and or guide. His rates seemed good. The other guide prices were much higher than his.
I went to the Mogote walking with some friends, what a experience to do a walking to a mountain. Nice weather over there.
The View is amazing and the trip is worthy every minute. Need to be in shape to enjoy the trip. Will recommend as a group to have fun all the way.
This is a tough hike with a steep incline towards the end. Beautiful view at the top! Bring water, a snack, and a rain jacket.
I'm not much of a mountain climber. I thought this would be a nice day hike, but it was a 5 hour trek. Well worth it, but definitely not an afternoon stroll.
El Mogote is the highest peak near Jarabacoa and offers spectacular views of the Valley. The hike itself is relatively short (5-6 miles round trip). It is not a technical trail and it is very easy to follow. You do not need a guide. There are spectacular views from the top, along with a ranger station, fire tower, and 3 scrappy dogs who will seem menacing at first but were eating out of my hand after 15 minutes on the summit. All of this being said do not climb this trail unless you like steep terrain. I am in relatively good shape and it still took me 1 1/2 hrs to reach the summit and I was going about as fast as I could. The descent took 1:10. The elevation at the trailhead is 2600 ft and 5160 at the top, therefore the ascent is 2500 ft +/-. For those who like a good work out, or those who love great vistas and are willing to pay the price this hike is for you. Otherwise, you're probably better off choosing another trail. A few more caveats. There is no water along the trail. The trail can be slippery coming down, especially the upper half. There is one trail junction about 10 minutes from the trail head where the trail divides- go left. This is the only place where it could be confusing and it is not marked. The trailhead itself is easy to find and only 10 minutes from the town of Jarabacoa. Take the road that follows Rio Yaque Del Norte upriver toward Manabao. After you pass the Jarabacoa River Club (on your right) look for a sign on your left (a few minutes up the road) for El Mogote. Turn left on this road. The trailhead is a few minutes (driving) up the road. The trailhead is on the left and well marked. It is the last trail marking you will see all day. I think the best place to park is after locating the trailhead to turn around and drive downhill about 200 yards to the first house on your left. The Adames-Duran Family live there. I asked to park in their drive and gave the boy 200 pesos. He was overjoyed. When I returned after the hike, he brought me inside of their house and introduced me to the entire family.Enjoy!
