We didn't want to be a part of the big groups of tourists so we decided to go on our own and at our pace. The Chu Chu Train was excellent. In the front car there where Spanish speaking people with a Spanish guide and in the second car with us there where french speaking folks in the back with a young fellow that spoke french and they put us in the front with a taped unit that was in English. The ride cost $12 and lasted almost a hour. This gave us a game plan and we walk the same route the next day and went through all the buildings at our own pace. Took a ton of pictures and met some very friendly folks. We recommend this to anyone that wants to see the abundance of history that Santo Domingo has to offer.
This chu chu train is too short in my opinion but at least they have something for starters. It could be more informative and a little longer than the 15 minutes ride.
I must say I was a little excited to go on the chu chu train and forced my husband to along with me on the ride. To be honest this ride is actually silly. You are divided on separate parts of the car depending on your language preference. After, they have a handheld speaker that narrates all the buildings and sight points. At points its hard to understand what it says. I found it a little fast since it didn't give time to know what building it's talking about and to actually take pictures and appreciate it by they time you do it's already moving on to the next point. The chu chu doesn't stop anywhere so you have to be fast at taking pictures. and at some streets you pass by it multiple times. In the end, after putting my husband through this torture, I didn't appreciate it. It's really not worth it unless you are with someone that is handicap or can't walk much, this can be an option for you. Otherwise hire a walking tour and you'll be able to see and learn more.
Good way to see a couple of the main attractions in the colonial zone. The audio narration was good although this was augmented by a local guide who was mostly unintelligible. For $12 it was an ok way to spend 30min.
The tour last about 45 minutes and it provides very good information of important landmarks in the old city. The employees are very courteous and friendly. The train ride is a bit overpriced but if you are interested in viewing the old city in a short amount of time it is the best way to do it.
We rode the Chu Chu as part of a Santo Domingo Excursion. It was nice to travel the Santo domingo Streets and listen to the guide narrate some important events, land marks etc. After a long day it was fun to just seat and enjoy the trip!
I liked that it went through the most beautiful part of the Colonial Sector. It 's comfortable. The ride did't finish fast. It takes like an hour to go back. I had a good time. Hope you enjoy it as well.
in this train you can see all the attractions in the Colonial Zone without walking around in the heat, and everything will be explained.
We took Chu Chu Colonial as part of Day Trip excursion by Nexus Tours. We had Spanish speakers in our group, but the majority was English speakers. They gave one wagon for 6 persons Spanish speakers and another wagon to around 25 persons English speakers. We found it so cramped, really uncomfortable. There were no space at all and everybody was sweating because of the hot temperature. It's ridiculous, they passed the same route twice moreover. There was no time nor space to take pictures neither. This chu chu was really the worst part of our St Domingo day trip excursion. A walking tour around the colonial area would have been more preferable to us.
Despite not usually enjoying this type of activity it was actually quite pleasant and we got to see a lot of the city in a very short space of time. Would recommend doing early so you get your bearings around the city. One of the street dogs followed us enthusiastically the whole way round and the locals seem pleased to see you riding around on the bus with some waves and smiles rather than resenting you as a tourist as would be the case in some other cities.
Enjoy the old fashioned chu-chu you enjoy in so many parks in the U.S. while touring Colonial Santo Domingo. The cost is nominal and drivers thoroughly versed on the history and points of interest. Enjoy!
A relaxing way to view the historic colonial zone in Santo Domingo. At just 500 RD, it was really inexpensive... Too bad I don't understand a word of Spanish... will have to ride it again with a translator guide next time.
