The Beach at Shoal Bay East is clearly one of the finest in the world-- a couple of miles of white powder--hesitate to call it sand. Beautiful azure water and coral for snorkeling off shore. Plenty of Lounge Chairs and Umbrellas at Elodia's, Tropical Sunset and Hank's. Never crowded so you feel it is your own beach. Add a couple of Rum Punch cocktails at any of the above noted joints and you have found heaven on earth.
The trip to Anguilla was one of the highlights of our vacation to St Maarten and I would defiantly recommend adding it to your itinerary. The most cost effective way to get there is via the public ferry. The operators are very friendly and the trip is about 20 mins or so. If you take a taxi from your hotel to the ferry terminal in Marigot ask your driver to pick you up if you know when you plan on returning and they will kindly oblige. If you are staying at Maho I recommend Daniel (A.K.A. the pimp), best taxi driver/tour guide I have ever had. When you arrive in Boiling point the lady in the both will set you up with a cab. A good tip is to get together with some other travelers to split the fare. We noticed some people from our hotel on the ferry and split the taxi-bus 8 ways which was about 9$ each with tip. The driver took us to Hanks Island Carousel who offers free beach chairs and umbrella with lunch which saves you 5-15$ depending on where you rent chairs from on the beach. See my review of Hanks at http://www.tripadvisor.ca/ShowUserReviews-g7092973-d2080045-r257361761-Mac_and_Hank_s-Shoal_Bay_Village_Anguilla.html#REVIEWSThe beach is amazing at Shoal Bay, the water beautiful and you can go out some distance and it is clear. When we were there the water was calm. If your not a beach person I wouldn't recommend going as that is the main attraction there. I would recommend 3 to 5 hours to enjoy the beach and lunch. Arrange for your taxi driver to pick you up in time to make your return ferry ride back to Marigot and they will also kindly oblige. I recommend hitting hanks up for a traveler for the cab ride back which is totally kosher. A great experience for the beach lover or the beach bar lover or even the people watchers.Plan this destination on your itinerary and make the trip on your own as most pre-arranged tours don't stop at Shoal Bay and start at $110 per person and up. $220 is more than enough for two people to get to Anguilla, have lunch and beverages and still return to St Maarten with money in their pocket.
This was the best beach that I've ever been to. The sand was white and the water was blue, what more can you ask for? It is a quiet beach and very clean as well
We took the ferry from St Maarten's to Anguilla. When we got off the ferry you are approached by the cab drivers once you have gone through customs. Be very careful. We were told to go to the dispatcher which we did. We told the dispatcher that we wanted to go to Schoal Bay beach. The dispatcher gave us a receipt which said $26. We found out later that that is the cost of a direct ride to the beach. Our driver DAVIS, who was told by the dispatcher to take us to Schoal Bay, decided to give us a tour of the island. After about an hour, we told him enough, we want to go to the beach. Once there he charged us $55. Our mistake, we should have given him the money prior to getting into the cab. To avoid a confrontation we paid him, but got another driver to take us back to the ferry. Normally the same driver would take you back when your visit is done. We simply didn't want to get jipped twice. Don't let Davis take advantage of you.
The water was a beautiful blue green and the sand fine and white. The beach became busier as it got closer to noon. There was a charge for chairs and umbrellas in front of some restaurants while they were included with meal at others...don't be pushed into a decision until you check out your options!
We took a day trip to Shoal Beach and were so happy we didn't listen to the people who said this trip wasn't worth it. The views were stunning, sand and water pristine, and the waters were calm. From what it sounds like there are a few days a month when it's rough, but we were there on a calm day and it was perfect. I felt like I was in a swimming pool it was so clear and pleasant! We rented chairs at Elodies which I thought was the nicest spot on the beach. Their food was very good and service was very friendly.
Lovely couple hours spent here during our day-trip from St. Maarten. Sand is white with a bit of a grain to the sand. Ocean waters gorgeous. Appears you can walk on the beach forever. Loved our time here.
We were in St. Martins and did a day trip to Anguilla; visiting Shoal Bay. We have stayed in several places in the Caribbean, and can honestly say I have not seen a more beautiful beach. The water was calm on the day we were there. It was perfect; so much so that we questioned if we were in a pool.
Relaxing & Beautiful! I caught the Marigot ferry in St. Maarten and spent a few hours in Anguilla to have a peak at Shoal Bay. I had heard from locals that it was a beautiful beach with white sand and crystal blue water. They were right, it's breathtaking. My only regret is that I didn't have my snorkeling gear with me! There is a reef not to far out that I would have loved to of seen. The ferry from St. Maarten to Anguilla is $20 USDThe taxi to Shoal Bay from the port is $26 USD **the last ferry out of Anguilla departs at 615PMEnjoy!!!
Though we had trouble finding it, this place was breathtaking. The blue of the water was beyond description. The white sand could not have been prettier. Madeariman was a wonderful restaurant on the beach. Really hated to leave (but found our way back easily!
