I was realy astonished how many birds had been there - we went there by boat and 50 km/h (not within the bird area) and had a lot of fun
Very nice if you like seeing wildlife in their native environment. Not a long excursion but a nice break from the beach.
A must see while in Barbuda. One of the largest populations of Frigate Birds in the world. Very interesting!
Can get close to birds. Fun boat ride. Lovely to hear the mating calls. Not a long trip. No other tourists there so feels intimate.
We take a trip from Coco Point Lodge to Fregate Bird Sanctuary in Fabruary 2014. You need to drive to through the whole island to get here, and it takes about 40 min. Then you drive about next 20 min on small boat, but you must ask if they have petrol, because it can be, that all boats are out of it... It is bird sanctuary, so it smells like on farm, so count with it., esp. our daughter feel sick of it.
First, this is a place which is somewhat difficult to get to. We were on a sailboat and, at that, the only one with the white beach of Barbuda stretching for mile north and south. Not a single person to be seen. We were anchored a few miles south of the Lighthouse Bay resort. We took our dinghy, went north a couple of miles to a house/ranch/hostel (?) and met a very nice fellow by the name "Guinness". He was willing to bring us to the frigate bird colony. The visit to the colony is free, but you do have to pay the boat/guide. We asked him to also bring us to the town of Codrington. The latter was a mistake as it is not worth visiting. We paid each $50 (US). The boat ride took about 1/2 hr. Close to the colony, the guide stepped out of the boat in waist deep water and pulled the boat by hand right up to the mangroves where hundreds of young birds were sitting. These birds can not fly for about 6 months and while we were there, some young birds took off for their very first, somewhat clumsy, flight! This trip was a great treat and I would highly recommend it if you can get there.
Young to adult ... close but not unnecessarily invading their space. These are magnificent birds ... just missed the mating season that ended in April. Guides very informative.
We took a boat trip to Barbuda and weren't planning on visiting the birds. But it has to be said that this extra trip is thoroughly worth it and I urge you to go. The small boats that take you there are exhilarating and fast, but the respectful guides slow down and switch off once near the birds. I am not a bird watcher but it was a joy to be near them in this true sanctuary. A beautiful place and beautifully guided. Thank you!
A unique chance to see these beautiful birds up close - especially if there are chicks.. a bit of a journey in an open boat but well worth it when you get there… a must see on Beautiful barbuda
It takes 1.5 choppy boat ride to the island, for 15 min view of the birds which cost 155$ , you do not get to see the town or really see anything on the island. The birds really cool to see
Boring rough journey. Loud music on board whole time. Would have liked more information about Barbuda
Amazing, the beauty of the birds. The guide explained the history of the birds and stopped any time we wanted to take a photo
I took a cruise to Barbuda for a day in September 2013 and was completely blown away by the pristine pink beaches and frigate bird sanctuary! This was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience! Not only were there thousands of birds, but thousands of unique jellyfish floating along the water too! Beautiful pristine blue ocean and perfect weather. Amazing! Highly recommend that you take a trip to this sanctuary while you are visiting the island.
So many impressive displays in one area. Many birds circling above and showing their puffed red chests to attract the females. We really felt for the ones who hadn't got a mate as it was near the end of the season.
I am not normally interested in birds but this is a must do. You travel out to the nesting trees on boats - there is no land, you have to complete the tour in small boats. Our tour guide was excellent and shared a lot of interesting information. You come within inches of the birds. It is really magnificent to see them up close, with wing spans of over 6ft it's definitely not one to miss!
