This sprawling, mature, garden lovingly established by the Renwick family offers a varied array of tropical plant material in a private setting. Randy came out and greeted us but as we were unexpected he could not give us a garden tour. He did briefly offer some highlights about Sunnyside and gave us a keyed map with numbers areas, some with additional information. He also told us if we had questions, we could ask the two gardeners working in various parts of the garden. AS we meandered through the garden were found a "tropical rainforest" area, a Japanese garden with a waterfall, ponds with carp, a kitchen garden, many fruit trees, and beautiful flowering plants of all colors. We would have liked to learn more about the house and garden so will arrange an appointment with Randy in the future. Make sure you have good walking shoes as the terrain is hilly.
We knew of the gardens because of my wife's research and so we just turned up not knowing any better, luckily there was a cruise ship tour going on so we were advised to tag along. Later we toured once more with a young man who was learning the ropes but was well informed. We also had the pleasure of conversation with the lady of the house who spoke to us from her balcony. It is a quirky tour as someone has previously mentioned and is so much the better for it. The punch we had was excellent, I can't agree with "businesstraveller" perhaps it was an off day.
A quirky tour by a quirky guide, which offered great insight into the garden contents. Go if this is your scene but do not take anybody who is less than a keen gardener. Best rum punch on the island!
Coming from snowy Boston and being interested in gardening, we always visit tropical gardens on our travels. Sunnyside Gardens in Grenada is a gem, a beautiful garden with a fascinating and unusual collection of plants, trees and flowers. It is situated in a private residence and so calling ahead before arriving is essential, although we called and said we'd be there in 30 minutes which was fine. Randy greeted us and gave us a tour, he is great fun, knowledgeable and interesting about the garden and island history, and we spent a very pleasant couple of hours there. Not only is there a spectacular array of flora, we got up close and personal with 8 inch caterpillars and tortoises as well. we thoroughly enjoyed it.
Dear Businesstraveler44We wish to apologise unreservedly for your disappointing visit to the Garden while you were in Grenada. We normally serve a choice of freshly made juice and rum punch to visitors using fruit from the garden. Our rum punch recipe includes freshly made nutmeg syrup and limes. Sunnyside is a 5 acre garden. The house itself was built in the 1920s and extensively restored in 2005 after hurricane Ivan, but we would be the first to admit that maintenance is quite a challenge in a tropical climate. Between the koi and tilapia fish ponds, tortoise shelter, kitchen garden and fruit and spice trees, Sunnyside is much more than its extensive planted areas. Nevertheless we appreciate the each visitor's needs are different and we will try harder in the future to ensure that these are met. Once again, please accept our sincere apology.
We went with Sunsation tours who also acted as our guide. The garden had matured and changed with the vagaries of the weather, adapting after storms and hurricanes. Great variety of plants and birds on view. Very interesting tour.
A lovely private garden open to the public for a small admission fees. We recommend booking, although we just walked-in and the owner (Randy) was pleased to accompany us on the tour of this wonderful garden and point out the different plants, trees and flowers in the garden and the amazing koi carps in the pond. We definitely recommend visiting but ask for directions before going as we had to ask a few locals to find this place!
We visited this garden as part of the Virgin Homes & Gardens Tour. We met the owner at the start but our Sunsation Tours guide took us around explained all of the plants and various themed gardens to us.We were very impressed with his knowledge which helped us to gain more insight into the garden, the plants and wildlife. There is plenty to see and the garden is broken down into various themed areas. Well worth a visit.
I arranged to visit this garden during a month's holiday in Grenada. I rang in advance to check it was OK to visit the next day. Like much in Grenada, the gardens are very easy to find when you know where it is. My wife and I drove on the main road from St George's to St Paul's. We initially turned off the main road, thinking the gardens were on a side road. We asked several locals, who either didn't know where they were, or thought they did and gave us incorrect directions. We had to ring again to ask for directions. The gardens are accessed via an un-named driveway, immediately after the entrance to St Augustine medical facility when approaching from St Georges. We parked beside the house and received a warm greeting. We preferred to walk around the gardens without a guide. There was a helpful leaflet with a key to 50 numbered trees and shrubs. We pottered around for about an hour and a half. The gardens are attractive with a variety of themed areas. There are some slopes and steps, but nothing to provide difficulty when wearing trainers. We thought 10 USD / 50 ECD to be an appropriate admission fee.
These are the gardens of a private home. Openings are limited but a call from your holiday tour guide may open the door. A modest admission charge for the extensive gardens that cover a hillside. You really need a guide who can point out all the exotic plants. Warning: is is a steep hill side, not recommended for anyone with restricted mobiity.
The five acres of Sunnyside Gardens, perched on the side of a hill off the road to St Paul’s, with its backdrop of mountains on one side and the ocean on the other is a treasure not to be missed. The garden is attached to a private residence and can only be seen by appointment, either through a tour operator [for a group try Sunsation Tours] or individually through the owner, Jean Renwick, on 440 1587. From multi-coloured tortoises to dazzling flora and fauna, once inside Sunnyside, we entered a haven away from the cares of the world where as far as the eye could see we were greeted by many different varieties of exotic tropical flowers and shrubs. There is a Japanese garden, fish ponds, an artificial waterfall built by the owner’s son Randy, different species of hibiscus, vines, coconut, fruit trees and multicoloured bougainvillea; the whole intermingling with age-old mahogany trees. The bird lover with us was not disappointed; we saw many birds, including several colourful humming birds. When passing a mouth-watering grapefruit tree heavy with ripe fruit, we were amused when the friendly owner explained that she didn’t pick the fruit because it was prettier left on the tree! Jean created Sunnyside after her four children had grown up, but in 2004 it was badly damaged by hurricane Ivan, thankfully now lovingly restored by Jean and her family. Lucky to be living on the island, it was a while before we discovered Sunnyside, but we plan to visit on a regular basis. The garden is well worth the entrance fee of US $10, GBP 6.50.
