A must see. Soon it will be closed for restoration! Such an amazing places! the views are spectacular. 360 degree view of the Caribbean. All the way out to Vieques and St. Thomas. LOVELY! Go see it while you can
I LOVE seeing a part of history but was saddened to see the Lighthouse was in such poor shape. I couldn't go to the very top because the stairs were rotted out. My husband navigated his way up to the top (I don't want to know how he did it) and took some absolutely breathtaking photos. This piece of history deserves some $$ for some much needed TLC to preserve it.
It's the kind of tropical island you dream of. A National Wildlife refuge. The lighthouse, although in disrepair, offers idyllic views of the surrounding islands and cays. Just one of the stops on this island paradise. Plan on a full day to make the most of this island and its secrets. Truly a privilege.
Built by the Spanish Crown, 1882-1886, now a historical monument of the United States. The roof is gone, the walls are crumbling, the spiral staircase is rusted. The views from the top are amazing!!
The views from the top of the lighthouse are magnificent. The structure is an accident waiting to happen. There is a current effort to save the lighthouse. It would be spectacular if this happens. The floors are tiles and the structure was once amazing. But it really is not a safe structure.
I read a few reviews on this area, but none described the area in much detail. The lighthouse was a long drive and wasn't so easy to find. Once there...the trip was worth every effort put into getting there. The Lighthouse...simple, compared to most. The cliffs and view surrounding the lighthouse are second to none. The most amazing view. Reminds of the Grand Canyon with an ocean for the base.Negatives...1) not easily accessible for the disabled2) the cliffs can be dangerous in the wind and rain3) dangerous for small children.
Culebrita Light was built in 1886 and has been inactive since 1959. It has a 43 foot cylindrical stone tower rising from the center of a one story stone keeper's quarters. The building is in ruins. An Aug. 2000 Lighthouse Digest article described Culebrita as quote on the brink of extinction.
