We took the day trip offered by Island Ventures to Isla Caja de Muertos. We booked the "deluxe" tour which included food and beverag for $53.50. We arrived at the ferry dock promptly at 7:30 and were boarded just after 8 am. The ferry was full and most people brought their own chairs and coolers. When we arrived at the island we rented and umbrella and two chairs. We were really glad to have the big umbrella to supply some shade. We selected a spot on the beach and the guys from the ferry came and dug a hole and set up the umbrella for us. We received 12 food and beverage tickets with our deluxe package. Food items - hot dogs and bbq chicken skewers- were two tickets each. Beer, soda and water were all ticket each. We didn't realize it but we could have used the ticket to get beverages on the ferry ride over. Food must be ordered on the boat upon arrival on the island so they know how much to cook. We got two of each and it was more than enough food for the two of us. The chicken skewers are large meaty and covered in bbq sauce. They come with sliced french bread. We spent the morning relaxing on the beach. It is recommended that hiking to lighthouse etc in the morning as it gets hotter throughout the day. We brought our own snorkel gear. They rent it too. However, the snorkeling wasn't great due to the cloudiness of the water. After lunch my husband decided to hike to the lighthouse and I stayed on the beach. He said the walk was achievable for someone with a reasonable amount of mobility. The views were outstanding up there. At the end of the day we gathered on the ferry dock at the time were instructed. The ferry was quickly loaded and left exactly on time. Minutes later two stragglers appeared on the dock an the ferry went back to get them. Once we were again underway for about 15 minutes the ferry turned around and to go and get two more stragglers. Don't be a straggler and make sure you have your belongings! One of the park employees found someone's car keys after we left as well. All in all this was an excellent trip and Isla Caja de Muertos is a beautiful place to spend the day.
This is a must do ! In order to get the ferry tickets you should reserve online with anticipation and follow the instructions (arrive time, place etc.) The beach is a small spot, but its great because is a small group who arrives in the ferry. Its a great space for swimming and take sun. You can bring your chairs and umbrella, but they rented those t oo. Also they sell hot dogs, beer and chicken kebab if you don't want bring much stuff. Definitely I will come back someday. PD : Don't forget your sunblock a nice hat and the sunglasses!!! the weather is warmer !!!
Its about 8 miles from my mother in laws house and its so beautiful!! I especially loved Pelican Beach
Caja de muertos is a small Island off of Ponce and a Natural Reserve. OnLy accesible to those with boats you can get there with http://islandventurepr.com/en for a $25 fee. The ship only carrys a number of passengers so the Island is never packed. Enjoy prestine beaches, walking to the lighthouse and the flora and fauna of the Island.
Love the scenery. The views are breathtaking (especially of you hike to the lighthouse); but the snorkeling wasn't that exciting. I think it's overused, so the visibility wasn't that good and there was not much to see. The boat ride there was kinda choppy. If you are looking for great snorkeling with great views, take a flight to Culebra and snorkel there! We went there with Aqua Adventures. We really like our guide and the boat captain and even made friends with the other customers on the boat, but www we looking for some good snorkeling and this place didn't deliver that.
This place is absolutely breathtaking! Caja de Muerto is a little gem in PR's south coast. We went with Island Venture, which appears to be the only ferry that provides service to/from Caja de Muerto. Their website is the following: http://islandventurepr.com/en. Service was excellent. We purchased the Deluxe package which included 12 tickets for food/beverage (more than enough for a full day). Ferry departs at 8:30am sharp from La Guancha pier in Ponce. It takes approximately 45 min to get there. They allow you to bring coolers but you will have to pay $5 to carry it on the vessel. Also, Island Venture provides umbrellas/chairs for $10 each. Make sure to call ahead and request your umbrella/chair if you have a Deluxe package, because these are usually set aside for folks who purchase tickets through Oferta del Dia (PR's equivalent to Groupon). The island has no fresh water/bathrooms so make sure to bring all your supplies with you to last from 9am until 3:30pm (ferry's departure time). There are bathrooms inside the ferry if you needed one, the vessel stays all day long in Caja de Muerto until departure. The ferry also has a bar where you can purchase beers and other alcoholic drinks. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful. I made the mistake of not taking an umbrella with me and the staff immediately assisted me in finding one. The island also has gazebos, a small museum, and a lighthouse. People can go to the lighthouse but is not recommended to go inside the structure because it was built in the 1800's and the building is in extreme decay. Be mindful of not leaving ANY trash behind. So take a couple of trash bags with you and carry all waste back to the ferry. Dept of Natural Resources has folks on site and they have authority to fine you if you leave trash behind or litter in the premises. My family had a great time (note that I took our 5 yr old) and we definitely would LOVE to go back. This place is beautiful for whatever type of group you plan to take, friends, family, children, couples, etc.. Can't recommend this place -and Island Venture- enough!
We loved our day on the island. Nice boat, good food for sale and what a view!!! Very affordable. Water wasn't as clear as I thought but the waters were a bit rough.
This excursion with Island Ventures was wonderful. I loved the convenience of being able to book on-line and the drive through the mountains from the North coast was beautiful. At the Marina We arrived at 7:30 and had even beat the Island Venture staff to the dock, which we were grateful for as there were no open restaurants serving breakfast. The Subway restaurant less than one mile away had very clean restrooms (the ones at the dock are a disaster. Seriously, I would imagine they have nicer facilities in prison. BYOTP). With our made to order egg sandwiches from Subway in hand we arrived back at the dock at 7:45 and jumped in line. As our 2 year old daughter was along for the ride we had a lot of stuff (noodles, several bags, and large cooler). It was an extra $10 for the cooler to come aboard. We were just able to snag the last table on the first level of the boat. We pre-ordered our lunch (hot dogs and Pinchos de pollo) from the crew on the way and they also take beach chair and umbrella rental orders (and payments) on the boat. On the IslandStraight off the boat most people made a bee-line for the built in gazebos near Pelican Beach. There are a few with a great view if you're among the first to arrive. Pelican Beach had a few sections and next time we will hurry to set up our beach chairs on the small part of the beach just down the stairs from the gazebos for convenience factor. If you leave snacks at the gazebo while you're on the beach ensure they are tightly sealed in plastic bags unless you want to share them with the ants. Composting toilets are an interesting experience, but at least there's somewhere to go. We hiked to the Coast Guard Beach and to the Lighthouse. Sneakers are a good idea as it is a rocky climb. We saw on the map there is a coral reef on the other side of the Island but ran out of time to make it. I think if you want to snorkel that reef, you have to pack a lunch, get off the boat and go as I'd estimate a 45 min - 1 hour walk to get there. BeachesPlaya Larga on the south side of the Island is reserved for the turtles, no people allowed.Coast Guard BeachA small stretch of white sand and crystal blue water where those with private boats tend to dock. For this reason swimming far from the beach is not allowed. Pelican Beach This is where 90% of the people on the Island Venture boat set up for the day. It is close to the facilities and dock, is a beautiful white sand beach and has a few decent snorkel spots (bring your own gear). The views are spectacular. The other beaches were too far for us to check out this trip. The boat began tooting its horn at 3 pm for the return trip to Ponce. We would have loved one more hour, but I guess that just means we'll have to come back.
At no point could I not see to the bottom. The water is cool but not cold. The sand is a pretty white color. We booked the deluxe package and let the people on the ferry worry about feeding us and having drinks for us. I preferred that rather than worry about a cooler. I wish there was a shower to get all the sand off but I understand with it being a tiny island why there isn't. There are gazebos and a museum. It was one of the best decisions we made on our trip to Puerto Rico.
My family booked travel to this Island with Island Adventure Ferry which is the only way you can get over. You can bring coolers, but there is a cost of $5 each I believe if they are large. The ride over and back was comfortable and uneventful. The crew was considerate. We chose to order on the boat going over a couple umbrellas for $5 each installed on the beach for us. Great decision. Roughly only 100 people can be on the island at a time given the ferry runs once a day (I believe only Weds-Sun) and that is the only way over. We were very comfortable on the island and candidly I don't know if I have ever seen more clear pristine water. It was just beautiful. We enjoyed swimming and snorkeling in the ocean. The water was calm; therefore, very easy to swim in. The sand was nice (not full of rocks/coral). Snorkeling was best for us on the right side of the boat (if you were sitting on the boat as it landed) between 50 - 100 feet from the small pier.Overall very good place to get away, small crowds, great beach area with exceptionally clear water. We were very pleased we went.
Isla Caja de Muertos is a breathtaking tiny paradise! To get to this paradise you have to book your trip online for the available date and, then catch the ferry at La Guancha. To catch the ferry you have to arrive early in the morning at around 7:30 am, especially If you want good seats on the ferry. In order to get good seats make sure to be one of the first in line otherwise you will be stuck sitting at the top of the ferry which does not have a roof and the blazing hot sun is right on you. But if you are one of the first in line you get to sit on the deck of the ferry which has a roof and a nice ocean breeze. The ferry takes approximately 30 minutes to arrive at the Island and, they play music and have refreshments for purchase. You have to make sure to bring everything you need to the Island because other than the Island, beach, lighthouse, restrooms, and beautiful views there is nothing else on the Island, not even trash cans. So make sure to bring garbage bags to bring your trash with you to be collected by the ferry administrators at the end of your trip. If you did not have time to pack a lunch, no worries for a fee the ferry administrators will take your order and deliver a light lunch to you right on the beach. You also have the opportunity to have a tour up to the lighthouse. The ferry will return back to the Island to pick you up at around 3:30 pm. This trip is a must! You will not regret it!
The shape of this tiny island off Ponce sea shore is a coffin! Check on the tour schedule. You need to carry water and a picnic ice cooler. Al friuts sandwiches etc. There no restaurant. It's a virgin and pristine beach. Great for relax. On weekends there's more people than on weekdays.
This bit of Ponce is absolutely spectacular. The crystal clear water and white fine powder beach is an absolute treat. This island is a natural reserve and protected by the department of natural resources. You must bring everything you need with you. Island Ventures is the charter company that takes you to/from Caja de Muertos and they rent chairs, umbrellas and you can buy food from them. Otherwise you have to bring everything in and bring everything out, including your own trash. There are bathrooms including accessible bathrooms. There's a path to the light house. The first part of the path is cleared and fairly easy walking. The second part as you begin your ascend is bit more difficult only because of the rocks and gravel. You'll want to wear something other than flip flops. While the light house is almost destroyed, the views are absolutely spectacular. This is a day excursion worth every penny.
Take his name from the Island shape. Clear water. Master reconstruction by the Department of Natural Resources. Great for snorkeling and diving experiences. Only reachable by boat. Take the Ferry at La Guancha on Ponce and is only a few minutes away. Lighthouse on the island and plenty of space for fun and recreation. Take a hike and be with all type of members from other species. Bring everting with you but remember to take all back with you. We want visitor to enjoy the island and also future generation.
The visit this small island south of ponce you must pay for a boat ride, the beach is small but since there's only one boat that travels there the beach dosnt get filled up. the water couldn't be more clearer so clean an amazing beach.
