Admittedly it isnot the easiest road to the top ,but well worth the effort The last 15 minutes are the most taxing for the suspension of your car from the park the panorama on a clear day is stunning there are days when the clouds cover the top of the hill . It is cooler there in the town the trails that have been laid out offer an opportunity to venture even higher up the hill or just enjoy the forested area. We took our sandwiches but if you want to you can grill up there. There is even a possibility to spend the night in a cabin. Definitely worth to try out
I stayed at Holywell State Park over the past weekend and I must say, the view is amazing! We had a group of students and stayed in cabins- very rustic and not for the "city dweller." We took the 1-1/2 hour drive drive up some of the worst roads in Jamaica to find a tiny piece of heaven for the night. There are three cabins to chose from, it's gets very cold at night...come prepared. There was a park ranger on duty- I'm not certain that I would stay with just my husband and myself (safety may be a concern). We didn't feel unsafe, as a matter of fact quite the contrary, but I don't want to mislead. With a large group (16) no problem. Anyway, at night you can see over Kingston with lights twinkling below and Stars twinkling above...majestic! They just got wifi, it actually sort of messes with the reason you go to a place like this! :-(. My recommendation, if with a group, risk to he horrible winding, bumpy roads and spend the night.
When you are in Holywell Park you are so high up you are in the clouds it makes you feel like you are in heaven. The back drop of the Blue Mountain Music Festival February 21 n 22 2015 will be the view of Kingston at night a must see.
The Hollywell Park forms part of the Blue and John Crow mountains nestled in the cool hills of St Andrew, Jamaica. As you get closer to the park you are enthralled with the rich vegetation that grows in the area also famous for it world renowned Blue Mountain coffee. At various points along the road you will see coffee plants.Hollywell park thick vegetation , its cabins and soothing and relaxing atmosphere provides the perfect ambiance for visitors and local alike to escape the city. Sit on a bench have some coffee and look over into Kingston while the mists allows you toenjoy
You have to be brave for the potholes filled drive but what awaits in blue mountains is a 1 hr 30 min drive from kingston in the middle of nowhere a cool spot for picnic with family and friends or just couples. Very basic but naturally preserved. You have water, electricity and bonefire places to enjoy BBQ and other stuff..I have been a regular visitor to this place and will continue
If you like the outdoors and you favour a day trip. Pack a lunch for the family or your special one and head to Hollywell. It has several short but scenic trails, several barbeque pits and camping ground should you want to camp over the weekend. And the park rangers are always there so secuirty is not an issue. If you decide to camp under the stars. It can be cold in the Nov to Jan months and since it kind of touches the sky, you'll always have your chance to see and feel moisture laden clouds rolling over the Blue Mountains and into Kingston - not to be missed.
We had a great time at Hollywell. Wished that we had brought warmer clothing we were freezing. Beautiful.
The road itself was an adventure (and scary most of the time) but the view at the top in the evening was really good. Also loved the log cabins because their is nothing like that on the North Coast where we usually end up
Up in the Blue Mountains is this beautiful place called Hollywell Park. The drive up improved the last time I visited in April 2013. Spent 2 nights in the one bedroom cabin at Hollywell which was my first time. 40 USD per night gave us a decent cabin, very clean and comfortable. I was extremely surprised as it is very rustic tet charming. Was catered with towels, soap etc and there was a free flowing water heater, which helped as the temperature dropped to 16 degrees Celsius compared to 30 in the city!! The night view was amazing from the cabin! In the morning we strolled to The Gap, a mere 15-20 mins walk, had breakfast with a beautiful view. The Gap boasts great coffee and ambiance with streamer tails hummingbirds feeding right at ur finger tips! Absolutely loved the park and serenity it offered. Will definitely go back again once I return to Jamaica!
Really nice panoramic views but nothing to do en route or once you are there. There are some basic cabins which may be rented for overnight stays and I hear that camping there is a possibility. Visitors are advised to enquire specifically about the safety concerns, if any.
I love visiting Hollywell, as someone had said it is worth the ride. You will be able to have a beautiful view of Kingston and its surrounding. It gets pretty chilly/cold there especially in the evenings so make sure you carry a warm jacket.People tend to go there to hang out, have a picnic, hike, ride their trailer bikes or ATV's, it very lush, untouched and very environmentally friendly. It has several cabins that can be rented if you wish to spend a few days there. There is a also a restaurant thats pretty close called "The Gap" food is very good and so is the coffee.Have fun!
We drove up to Holywell park in our rental car from Kingston. Our rental was a Toyota Corolla, so yes, you can reach this place with a non-4 wheel drive car. It is a long winding road with lots of potholes from Kingston - Papine via Irish Town and Newcastle, it took us an hour from Papine. The turnoff is right at the main road, the B1, just after Hardware Gap. There are some great views over the Kingston area on the way.The park itself is beautiful, it is a great place for a picnic (bring your own supplies, there is nothing to buy up there). There are several hiking trails that are well posted and well maintained (you can't get lost). Temperature is nice and cool up there, bring an umbrella as it can always rain up there. We did the Oatley Mountain Trail which took us about an hour with 2 young children. lots of stairs but not too strenuous. You are rewarded with great views into Portland parish and an adventurous trail that our children loved. We found it well worth the drive from Kingston.
Great place for taking kids to ahve fun, lots of room to run around and a great playground. Take your food and enjoy the trail down to the river.Great place ofr the summer, nice and cool in the hills.
Very tranquil great for picnics and very cool as its situated high up in the mountains. Road is winding and narrow to access it.
If a nice drive in the Jamaican countryside and walking or hiking in the interest you then this is your place. Now you can't be in a rush to get there or a rush to leave. It is quiet and peaceful, except when the Dirt Bike drives through maybe once a month on Sundays other than that it is a great place to take a picnic and go for a hike. Now it rains very often and can be chilly when your expecting typical jamaican weather. But the cabins are very nice to rent also and in expensive. this is something to consider if you like the outdoors and can spend a day or two away from the normal tourist experience.
