Basically my wife thought it was wonderful and is keen to go back next year and I thought it was OK. I thought $17.50 was on the high side but using his pick-up service of $30 each was not too bad considering the cost of a taxi from the Beach Road. We went at 8am and were greeted by Barney with a little introduction. Two more guests were arriving at 0830 so we were happy to chat to the young and charming Damian and feed the hummers. The garden is smallish but well cultivated with different plants. The 2 hours finished with a passion fruit and banana smoothie.A nice pleasant start to the day and there was no hard sell of anything else. I can see we shall return next year.
I truly enjoyed our time at Barney's Hummingbird Garden! I expected the area to be a bit larger, however, found it charming none the less. Enjoyed feeding the birds right from our hands. Barney was not there, so did not get to meet him. Yet his young assistant was very knowledgable about the birds, plants and fruits. I felt it was worth the 17.50 we paid. Would recommend this place to anyone wanting to check out something different to do!
This is a pleasant little backyard garden and they have six hummingbirds which will (if you're lucky) come and feed from a little bottle of sugar syrup that they give you. Our guide was very nice and it was a very nice garden area, but it's totally not worth the $20 ($17.50 plus tip) we spent on this experience. Spend a little and get yourself to Mayfield Falls.
Thank you Barney for your wonderful garden. We had a lovely time feeding the Hummingbirds and the delicious smoothies (produce home grown) provided. Since Barney was busy with other guests, Damian was our guide and he was very informative, funny and very chatty! Damian have a real rapport with the birds considering he'd only been there 3 months - there was 'Beko' who flew around Damian shorty after us arriving. We were very lucky to have many photos and videos of us feeding the birds. Look out for 'lazy bird' - we think it was a 'Mango Hummingbird' whom prefer you to feed it whilst it sat on a branch! As well as the birds, there was hens and its chicks and many plants and flowers to admire. We highly recommend a visit!
Went in the morning as Barney had said this was the best time for the birds. We had a group of 8 of us and at least three of us had hummingbirds eating from our personal feeders that Barney provided. I personally had two long tail hummingbirds and a mango one eat from my feeder. We also saw other birds and chickens in this beautiful garden setting. Barney and his Jamaican assistant, Damon were very helpful and treated us to a very pleasant hour and a half. Including providing us with delicious banana and mango smoothies! I look forward to taking others to this quaint little getaway just north of Rick's Cafe.
The recent negative reviews of this attraction made us somewhat hesitant to visit. However we we're delighted to have had an opportunity to see and feed the hummingbirds. By my count I had about 20 close encounters with the birds. Five or six came right up to my handheld feeder and numerous others while sitting at a table where there was a stationary feeder. Our host was a delightful young man named Damian who was a fountain of knowledge when it came to all the birds in the garden not just the hummingbirds. The garden itself is relatively small but there was an amazing variety of plants and trees . We sat underneath a passion fruit tree while hummingbirds flitted around us. It was a truly unique experience and for anybody on the west end f Negril this attraction is walkable and just past Just Natural, the restaurant.
We were picked up at Grand Lido Negril by Ron. Ron drove us directly to Barney's. We were greeted at the gate. Within a few minutes we saw a beautiful hummingbird. We were there for 90 minutes and had several close encounters with beautiful hummingbirds. We even had a couple drink from the bottles we were holding. We were very pleased with our visit and Barney's smoothies are AWSOME. The fee was $27.50(us) per person. That includes the cab from the hotel.
Had a great experience today at Barneys. We went at the worst (hot) time of tbe day. Barney and Damien were very welcoming. Within minutes, beautiful hummingbirds were eating from our hands. We lingered for well over an hour and a half. This is a true Jamacian experience: tropical gardens planted with care, natural, almost rustic. The variety of hummingbirds was great - absolutely beautiful. Barney was interesting and and informative - a real character. Fun visit.
We are shocked by this truly hostile review. We think terms like "junk yard" are violating TRIPADVISOR'S guidelines.
We went as a group of 5 and all but one had the hummingbirds feeding out of our hands. A beautiful little garden and so very relaxing. Barney and his crew made us feel so welcome and he makes a very refreshing smoothie. The flowers were beautiful and there were many butterflies, small lizards and other garden creatures about. Barney sent a very friendly local cab driver for pick up from Couples Swept Away and wish we were going to stay longer in the area to use the cab driver for a side tour. Just not enough time. If you like gardening and hummingbirds, this would be great for you.
Barney could have cared less than we came. He did not offer a 15 minute tour as advertised. There were few birds. I looked forward to this so much and discovered I know more about hummers than Barney did. He was "busy" flitting back and forth-doing lawn work and whatever else he had to do. We could smell marijuana. :( We could have enjoyed a wonderful dinner for $55./coupleI read the reviews before we came and had anticipated a wonderful visit. We went at the end of the day. He should not stay open if the birds are not active. He should also change the ad to read---on your own and don't expect anything from me. :(
We ha so much fun on our visit to Barney's Hummingbird Garden Jamaica, a return visit was on the top of our list of things to do when we returned to Negril Valenines weekend thi February. This visit to this lush tropical garden saw us feeding Purple Mango, an the streamertail Doctor Bird hummingbirds. It was a litte windy during our late afternoon visit, and alas the tiny Vervain hummingbirds remained lllusive. Barney was a great host serving refreshments whilst we took in the flowers, plants, sounds, artwork, and the birds in thi private garden. Barney offers a package at a speclal price which includes addmission to the garden, and roundtrip cab transportation from your hotel. Call before hand to set up a tme for a visit. If you are looking for a relaxing enchanted humingbird experience, a visit to Barney's is sure to please. These Texas Hummingbird lovers are looking forward to another visit next trip to Negril!
We visited in February 2015 having found Barney's through Trip Advisor, it's not a massively publicised experience but then it only accommodates a small number of visitors. This makes it all the more special rather than the hoards of tourists at the usual attractions. Barney is passionate about this place and has made this little cornder of the West End of Negril into a heavenly garden and sanctuary for wild Hummingbirds. We managed to feed and handle the birds and also got the oportunity to see the national Doctor Bird too. The birds only visit if they want to as they are free to roam, I have to say that even if we weren't lucky enough to have got up close and personal with the visiting birds, it's well worth going if just to hold court with Barney and learn about his work and local plants and life, oh and to try the rather stunning fruit smoothie. Thank you Barney.
We emailed barneys to arrange a visit the following day and received a response confirming our driver would pick us at the time we had requested up within minutes! On arrival we were greeted by barney and two local guys who had great knowledge not only of the birds but also the beautiful plants and flowers in the garden. We waited only a few minutes before our first hummingbird sight, we saw three or four different birds during our hour stay and they never left the garden for long. We fed them sugar water whilst they sat on the branches and they flew down to barney so he could feed them from the table! We also had a lovely fresh smoothie whilst we were there. A lovely place to visit for a nice natural experience, the care and 30 years barney has spent creating the garden are worth a trip.
Beautiful garden on the south side of Negril, populated by hummingbirds and your passionate hosts Barney and Javon. The birds are wild so they come and go and its exciting to see one, even more exciting when they come flying over to be fed. Have your little red bottle of sugar water and your camera ready! This place is well worth the trip.
