Provo Ponies!
My husband is the horse person in our family, and has always wanted to ride on the beach. We finally got to make that dream a reality on this vacation-- not many places in the world where that is an option! Most of the people on our tour were very tenured riders, which made the novice in me anxious. However, the staff was absolutely wonderful and accommodating to the different levels and interests. They never let you out of sight, which was a comfort to those who like to make sure all is going well (I've been on other rides where they have kind of left me and I didn't know what I was doing). At the same time, for those who wanted it, the rife was a lot less regimented than many trail rides. You didn't have to stay single file most of the time, and they let riders trot throughout, as well as cantor on the beach. Of course the ride into the ocean was the highlight. Even on an hour long ride we got to stay in the water for about 30 minutes. Be prepared to get wet and enjoy your ride!
Our 13 and 17 year old girls loved their 90 + min adventure!! They match you to the best horse for your experience and comfort level! Very clean and well cared for animals! You literally go in the ocean on the horses!! Up past their bellies!! You will get wet!! Our girls thought this was awesome!! They weren't restricted to follow the leader... And were allowed to have a very individual ride, it was up to the rider to control the horse, if they wanted! If they just wanted to ride and follow, that was fine too! Book early!! Keep trying if you don't hear back... They are very busy and don't have a designated receptionist!
My wife talked me into doing this excursion since she used to ride horses as a child. It was a tough decision for me since I didn't want to lose beach time. However, I am extremely glad that we decided to go. The ride along the beach was spectacular. There is a natural beauty to the Turks and Caicos and if you haven't seen the water, you will be amazed. The colors of the water are spectacular. You will take a short ride down some quiet streets and a trail to Long Bay beach. Once there, you will go right into the water with your horse. A new experience for me and one I won't forget. The horses are well maintained and respond as well as can be expected. I'm not an experienced horse rider so the horse probably knew it. I was the lucky recipient of "Turtle". I assumed he would be some old, fat horse but my jaw dropped as a 2000 pound horse was given to me. This isn't a misprint, yes, he is the largest land animal in the country but was a good boy for me. Lastly, I must comment on the staff. Everyone at Provo Ponies were friendly, knowledgeable, and efficient. If you have the time, definitely try them out. It is very worthwhile.
The Good:They take great care of their horses. This was the first trail ride I've been on where they have weight restrictions. This was also the first time I've been in the water on a horse, and it was great! The guides were good about taking photos of our group and we each ended up with several pictures from when we were in the water. The Bad:My horse was more stubborn than I had expected, and it was the first time I'd really run into this on a trail ride. I didn't have any trouble stopping her from eating leaves along the way, but had difficulty getting her to change from the nose-to-tail pattern or to pick up the pace to a trot.I was also surprised that there were two incidents where some of the horses shied (once before we'd left and a different horse near the end of the ride.) I know horses are skittish by nature, but I've found trail rides are usually pretty non-eventful.The Ugly:We all know horses poop. No one should be surprised when this occurs on a trail ride. However, prior to this, I had never asked myself the question: does horse poop float in salt water? It turns out it does. It's not a huge deal, and seems to break down pretty fast, but since you aren't nose-to-tail in the water, and have to maintain a 6-8 foot distance from other horses, it may be unavoidable. If this is the type of thing that would make riding in the water a deal-breaker for you, this isn't the ride for you.Advice:Bring a camera (you can wear it in a fanny pack they'll give you and then take pictures for you).Wear a helmet (they have tons of them).
Check another item off our bucket list! Have always wanted to ride along side and in the ocean and this accomplished both! Staff was very friendly and made us feel very comfortable with the horses. Would love to do this one again!!
Provo Ponies was on the top of my to-do list & it definitely did not disappoint! We made a reservation a few weeks prior to arriving on the island; the booking process was seamless, & when I asked to add a roundtrip taxi last-minute, they did a great job of accommodating. Being “tour snobs,” we prefer private tours while vacationing, however we opted for the group tour & couldn’t have been more pleased. When we arrived at the stables, the staff spent a great deal of time going over safety, understanding everyone’s riding levels, & matching everyone to an appropriate horse. Being beginners with little riding experience, I was paired with Patches while my boyfriend was paired with Levi; both were very well-behaved. The dirt road we rode down to get to the beach was pretty un-scenic, but it gave us a chance to get comfortable with our horses. Once we reached the beach, the horses began getting in the water, gradually getting deeper & deeper; it was such a fun experience! & Not to mention, one of the guides took our camera & captured some great shots of us in the water! From the knowledgeable staff, to the friendly horses, to the gorgeous beach, we loved everything about the tour & would highly recommend Provo Ponies!Side note: A majority of the people in our group were beginners & from what I could see, all the horses were very well-behaved, so I have to disagree with the review below – A first-time rider would be fine on these horses, I would just make sure the staff knows so they can match accordingly.
I have been on quite a few trail rides and this one was very fun! Going into the water with the horse was a first for me and was a really fun experience! The only negative thing I have to say is the horses are not quite as well behaved as the other trail rides I have been on previously. I would recommend this for maybe people who have been on trail rides a couple times or have a bit of experience with horses rather then someone who has never been on one before. They are more of a handful. Overall very fun and the guides are great for helping you too! Beautiful ride and I would recommend to people with some horseback riding experience!
A group of 11 took the plunge and had a ball despite the lack of cooperation from the weather. The guides were great to work with and were obviously excellent with both people and horses !! Riding on Long Beach and in the water is a must for everyone regardless of level of experience. All of us agreed that it was well worth the $$ and alot of fun.
This is a fun experience. We happened to do it on a slightly cold day which made the horses a bit more skittish, but the guides kept everything together. If you are looking for a unique experience like horseback riding on the beach, you can trust Provo Ponies to deliver. They were extremely good with children, too, which is a big plus.Tip: The one hour ride is probably plenty for most beginners. The 90 minute seems tempting, but I am not sure you necessarily get more enjoyment out of more time. 60 minutes on a horse is still a long time for a beginner and seemed perfect.
It's our second year going back riding with the kids 9 and 7 years old when we come to Turks and Caicos. It's wonderful riding along the beach and riding in the water. For the more experience riders, you get a chance to canter at the beach which my husband and my oldest daughter did. My 7 years old daughter didn't have much experience but she wanted to trot, which they let her do it on the beach and again in our way back on the dirt road. The instructors are very friendly and did a great job. They have 60 or 90 minutes ride. We like the 90 minutes ride in the afternoon.
We did a private 2 person ride with Provo Ponies in January 2015. We were able to talk to people who did a normal group ride and they seemed to love their experience just as much as we did. Our guide was very friendly, professional and helpful. The horses are well trained and the staff took time matching us with horses based on our skill level. I have very little riding experience and was matched with a gentle giant named Thor. He was perfect! We were able to go deeper into the ocean than the people on the group tour (they still went completely into the ocean, though!), which was well worth the extra cost. We were able to go at our own speed, which was also a bonus! The horses seemed to enjoy being in the water just as much as we did! They made loud happy noises as we rode around in the calm, clear water. Our guide took a video with our iPhone and tons of pictures of our ride! The private ride is definitely worth the cost! Definitely recommend this excursion, even for people with little to no riding experience! You won't regret it!
