The day we went it was windy. We took a bunch of photos because the bay looks like a postcard photo. The shore is rocky, and the trail to watermelon Cay runs along behind here. Also there are sugar plantation ruins nearby to explore.
Park at the Annaburg Ruins parking lot or along the road, grab your snorkel gear and walk the level shaded gravel road for 0.8 miles along the rocky shore and crystal clear turquoise water. Many visitors were "camped out" in chairs on the rocks sharing their excitement of seeing turtles and a plethora of fish. The small sandy beach was crowded, but the path continues past the beach and splits. Stay on the path closest to shore and once it requires scrambling over some rocks, don your snorkel gear and swim out to Waterlemon Cay. The current can drive snorkelers away from the sandbar, but being aware of this makes it less intimidating. The sandbar offers a chance to take a rest, and then snorkeling counterclockwise limits the current's effect. The first side of the Cay offers more coral and fish, like observing a carefully arranged aquarium. Once completing the swim around the cay, the sandbar offers another chance for a brief respite before swimming back to shore. It is double joy to spend some time snorkeling off the rocky shore and appreciating the unique beauty of this bay. Many day sails make this a memorable stop, why not you?
We hiked the trail to Leinster Bay to snorkel and spend time on the beach. Unfortunately, the beach is tiny and the many day-sailors park their inflatable launches on the majority of it - taking up precious beach space. The snorkeling was great, though, but don't plan to enjoy any beach time.
If you want to see fish, turtles and get relax on the beach - this is perfect space. You won't be disappointed .:)) Take your own snorkeling gear - i did not noticed any rental places there.
Amazing snorkeling! We swam with a nurse shark, sting rays, and.....yes.....an amazing, beautiful sea turtle! We were all smiles after this unforgettable morning swimming and experiencing the beauty of nature in the most beautiful blue water you will ever see!
This beach (and bay with great snorkeling) is about a 30 minute hike from the Annaberg ruins parking lot. That hike discourages all but the determined snorkelers from venturing out. There isn't much of a beach here, and the shore is somewhat rocky (small rocks), so water shies may be useful. There were a number of birds in the area when we visited, and we saw a few rays while snorkeling, making the adventure worth the walk.
While it's a bit of a hike to get to Leinster Bay, it is more than worth it. The sea life here is never disappoints. My husband and I have visited on several occassions and have seen turtles, barracuda, skates/stingrays, and star fish each time. During one visit, there were literally hundreds of starfish. Even relaxing on the beach, there is wildlife to see...the mongooses and crawfish like to hang out in the trees and brush that back the beach. Loads of fun!
There is a small island in the right end of the bay, you need to swimm until there from the end of the track, but it was definetely the best snorkelling we did in the island.
The mile walk to the beach was well worth the fabulous snorkeling at Leinster Bay! I was truly "swimming with the fishes", lots of pretty and cool marine life including tarpons, stingrays and turtles!! For great snorkeling, be sure to hit Leinster Bay!
We hiked the Leinster Bay trail to Waterlemon and swam around the Cay. Lots of beautiful fish and corals to see.
The title says it all. The .08 of a mile hike to this location from the end of the road is well worth it. Accompanied by pelicans and sea gulls, swimming off the beach has you nearly immediately surrounded by uncountable numbers of silver fish, moving as one body. Going further out and following the rocky shoreline brings you to many more varieties of fish and coral. Be sure to wear study shoes for the hike and bring water / food.
awesome snorkling. go out to the island and see wonderful fish/corals/turtles/ etc. but on the way back to shore there is a very strong current to go against. conserve your energy and swim slowly. liked: no tourists, mongoose, iguuanas, pelicans, turtles, large variety of fish, : did not like: seclusion if by yourself can be scary. parking easy. about 15 min easy walk to beach area which is very small. some boats anchored out a bit so there are people if emergency. but heard there was a drowning last summer here. so currents are a real concern esp if not a good swimmer.
If you go to Water Lemon Cay, you might not think about snorkeling Leinster Bay, but it's worth it. We saw some great trumpet fish, sea urchins, and turtles.
Another nice beach but we were looking for good snorkeling and thought it was just OK. Other people really like the snorkel on the left side of the bay as you face the water. We thought It was OK but you should check it out for yourself.
Follow the trail to Waterlemon for great snorkeling. Rocky shoreline with sea urchins...be very careful. Snorkeling is fantastic. No beach, mongoose get into your beach bags and steal your food so make sure everything is closed and zipped. The .8mile hike is mostly shaded, a little rocky but flat and very do able. Not for small children.
