Col John McRae who wrote In Flanders Fields once lived here - a worth while stop for any WWI history buffs
Is there anyone in the Western world who hasn't heard or know McCrae's poem? I doubt it and this charming home and garden tells so much about the man behind the famous words. With 2014 being the 100th anniversary of the start of WWI it might be particularly appropriate to drop by but check the hours before you go. They have a good and helpful website.
This is the museum birthplace home of World War I Lt. Colonel John McCrae who wrote the famous poem, "In Flanders Fields." Call for opening times because the home is open on a limited basis. This does not prevent you from looking around the exterior of this home or walking in the memorial garden adjacent to the house. The modest home sits on a quiet residential street. The memorial garden is surrounded by a beautiful stone wall. It is a place for quiet reflection. The heartfelt poem is inscribed on a stone tablet. McCrae House is located at: 108 Water StreetGuelph, ON NIG 1A6519-836-1221(direct phone line 519-836-1482 – answered during gallery hours only)
I can't believe it took me this long to experience this iconic house. I've been to Guelph countless times visiting family, and finally took some time to visit this small museum. It will not take you long to go through the museum, even if you read everything. Lots of interesting bits of information about John, including things most probably did not know. The gardens outside the house are also beautiful, and worth a stroll. There is also a monument in the gardens. Despite the small size, this is completely worth a visit. I don't think it gets enough recognition, given the iconic, internationally-recognized poem. And check out the visitor book inside....you'll see that some international tourists do make the effort to visit this unassuming site.
Went in the morning and the flowers and gardens were lovely. Unfortunately we were not able to stay until the attraction opened.
If you are in the Guelph area, do visit this small museum, the home of the poet who wrote In Flanders Fields about World War I. It is a moving experience and an opportunity to teach children a bit about history, Canada's role in WW I and the futility of war. My family found this to be a worthwhile experience and the gardens are quiet and beautiful.
After years of saying we should visit, we finally did! Lovely setting, between the river and the McCrae park we really enjoyed our time at teh museum. Though small, there was a lot of photos, and other information to take in. The curator was very friendly and helpful and they even sell some reasonable priced gifts that we bought! Worth a visit, especially around Rememberance day
This is a small but well done museum for the history and life of John McCrae and the poem he wrote - In Flander's Fields. Have visited numerous times as a Guelph resident for tea in the gardens in the summer - this is a very unique event done by volunteers and "afternoon tea" is hard to find in Guelph. (book early, they sell out, info on website for each summer). Interesting heritage gardens, also done by volunteers. The gift counter has some interesting articles, the best is the leather poppy that is worn by our family to the annual Remembrance Day service in Ottawa and admired by many including the wife of the GG.The site also has a memorial to WWI that is revered and honoured by our local Legion Branch 234 each Remembrance Day with a short service. Only issue is that tourism Guelph does little to acknowledge or market this gem.
Have you ever heard of the poem In Flanders Fields, a famous poem written by Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, it is time to visit his birth place in Guelph right on the Speed River shore. A very interesting exhibition telling Mc Crae's life story.
This small museum documents the life and service of John McRae. It displays an interesting collection of his writings, photographs, and other personal affects. It all serves to humanize and make him much more relatable. I also found the history of Remembrance Day traditions interesting, particularly the evolving design of the poppy. The house and gardens are both attractive & well-maintained and there's also a lovely memorial located in the garden.
The McRae House is a great place to take your kids to learn about the first world war. There is also a teddy bear picnic in the summer, and a poppy sale in the spring. A group of short wave enthusiast broadcast from the site each year, and will send your loved one a message.
