This old railway bridge was going to be torn down, but fortunately the public-spirited people of Goderich and other places in Huron County had a better idea and raised the money necessary to convert it into a walkway across the Maitland River, leading to the walking trails on the other side, which the visitor should explore before returning. The view from the bridge is delightful, especially when the leaves are turning, the last golfers of the season are playing a round, and a few fishermen are trying their luck in the river. Bring your camera!
This is a site great for the locals. They may find their family name written on one of the boards of the bridge. The names denote who contributed to the saving of this bridge. if you decide to follow this trail to "Dunlop's Tomb" I suggest you are prepared for the long walk back as well. Take some water and wear good walking shoes. Although well worth the trip it is a long haul. Better to drive around to the other side and take the shorter walk.
We just drive over this bridge on the way to relative's houses, but it is just gorgeous in the fall, and we see fishermen wading through the river at times as well.
Be sure to pick up a trail guide booklet for the area. There are quite a few trails of all skill levels in and around Goderich. We walked along the beach trail in Goderich and really enjoyed this pretty bridge and the wonderful views on each side.We cut our walk a bit short when it began to rain but the trail continues for some ways after the bridge. Very nice area! If you are just planning to walk to and over the bridge, you will only need a half and hour or so.
'The Menesetung Bridge is part of the Dunlop Trail and is accessible from North Harbour Road and just off of Highway 21, one kilometre north of Goderich. This portion of the trail is steeped with history as it leads you by the 1907 CPR Station house and then over the Maitland River on a converted CPR bridge. The bridge was converted for pedestrian use in 1992 and renamed Menesetung, the word the Chippewa used to refer to the waters of the Maitland River.' We walked through the Port Park for about an hour and were delighted with the trails and flora. Looking forward to a return trip.
The bridge is worth walking over, clearly a labour of love for those who had it transformed into a pedestrian bridge. I didn't wander too far on the trail, but I will say that it's quite overgrown so the views are somewhat lacking
My wife and I hiked this trail and walked the bridge and then walked some more trails. It was a beautiful day and the scenery for taking a pic or two was breath taking.Well worth the stop,it's not that long of a hike, people of all ages would appreciate this view and the wildlife,a real gem for this region.
A peaceful stroll with a wonderful view of a very special place with historical importance to the area. A tribute to those with the foresight to preserve this structure
Nothing spectacular, but a very nice walk on an abandoned railway line. View is probably a bit better in the autumn, and is no doubt spectacular when the leaves change colour. Watch out for poison ivy if you leave the path -- and watch out even closer if you continue on the next trail (after the overpass over the highway).
I'm not a fan of heights but I couldn't pass up the view. Great view of locals fishing in the river and the large vessels being loaded and unloaded. One side has the view of golf course greens and the foliage in the back ground. Great trails off the bridge at the end as well. A large plaque tells the story of the history and the fundraising tiles along the bridge show the support from familys. Well preserved and a beautiful sight in the fall
From train rail-way to walking bridge much of which was privately funded as you will see when you walk it. Lovely views to East and West as well as watching the fish below.
I have been walking this trail for many years and always enjoy my time on the bridge. It is easily accessible from North Harbour Road and there is parking at the foot of the trail. Things to do on the bridge: at the end of the golf course there are a couple of small pools connected to the river - look for beaver in there. It varies from year to year, but you may get lucky. In the center of the bridge look down and see the fish swimming. Look for heron along the banks of the river often on the far bank, but sometimes out in the middle if the water isn't too high. Canada geese, ducks, and gulls can easily be spotted. The bridge is well maintained and new underpinnings were put in last year so it is perfectly safe. Enjoy the time on bridge - just watch out for cyclists who don't walk their bikes.
Stopped here for a quick walk along with the family. Knew before arriving that we were just here for the view and quick stroll along the bridge, if we had more time and cold water we would have followed the trail after the bridge for a good long hike. Great views all around and just a nice place to go for pictures and quality time with the family.
...and quite happy that we did. We had only gone down this way to find a restaurant that turned out to not be open that day. This was a bonus find for my husband, dog and I. Not being one for heights, I was a little nervous, but the bridge was very stable and sturdy, so I was more than comfortable to go all the way across. If you have the time, I'd definitely recommend you visit there when you go to Goderich.
