This is not a long distance for travel if you are going across the #401 and as a Kingstonian I have been here many times to enjoy a walk, some fishing, some boats going through the Rideau Canal, or listening to a freight train going over the tressel!!!Picturesque place and nice in the summer for sure.
Have been a few times for fishing or just walking around taking in the scenery. There are lots of interesting things to learn about or just take a picnic and watch the boats come in.
this is a wonderful area for families. many go here to picnic and spend some time outside. watch the boats go up and down the river and see how the locks work. follow the path downstream and you can find the local rock climbing site and fishing spot.
We had not planned a trip to locks, but stumbled upon them when taking a long detour due to a bicycle race in downtown Kingston. This Parks Canada facility has college students operating the locks as pleasure craft travel up the Rideau Canal. The staff is very open to answering questions and the area is very scenic. I am so glad we found this spot.
A quaint spot just minutes from Kingston and worth the visit. If you are able to see a passing boat and the locks functioning, even better. A good spot for a break when you are touring about.
Scenery, history - this place, minutes away from Kingston should not be missed for all it has to offer. Take a picnic, enjoy the walks, the museum and especailly the boats passing through. The locks are outstanding - really interesting. We visit here regularly and love it every time.
Kingston Mills has locks, that are opened to allow for the passing of the larger boats. It has an area where you can have a picnic and sit and enjoy a nice summer day. Very relaxing.
this place is just a quiet beautiful place to see. Get out of your car and walk around the locks and see how they work. the only thing here is beauty and a place for a picnic and to walk around the canal.......a must see
Bring a lunch, maybe something to grill, and a camera. This place is beautiful and serene with places to sit and enjoy the sights. There are picnic table steps from the gates. The gates are all wood and operated manually by a team of hard working chain crankers. They really hustle. While you're here, strike up a conversation with some of the boat owners passing through. My only regret is that I didn't have my fishing gear with me.
The grandchildren really enjoyed following the boats through the multiple locks. The Parks Canada staff were very informative and even let the kids help with the locks. We saw mink and turtles.
This place is absolutely stunning. We watched while the locks were operated which was fascinating to see. The locks are still operated manually and the operators are very friendly and enjoy talking to visitors. We had our dog with us and the surrounding area is a mecca for wildflowers. Our dog loved this place as much as we did - we were on our way to Ottawa or we could have stayed for a relaxing picnic. If you are visiting in the summer (or warm day) bring a picnic or some wine and sit at one of many picnic tables and enjoy the flowers and sound of rushing water!
This place is very beautiful, great for picnics. The only problem is that I did find a car in the water a few summers ago... but I guess thats settled out now.
This place is nice and quiet for a visit but not much there to do to go more than once. We cycled out from Kingston which in itself was quite pleasant.
Always like a nice country drive to the historic locks! Great view, can see them operating in the summer! Great place to stop, walk around, and even take a picnic! Close to the City and worthwhile seeing!
Summer mornings, you will find people fishing, silently nodding and smiling.Summer evenings, walkers and cyclists take over.On long winter nights, dog walkers know that the stars are fabulous up here. This location is significant to the history of the world. The Rideau Canal System and Locks are an utterly astonishing, incredibly durable feat of engineering. Come see it up close!
