agnes etherington art centre

We were in town visiting the campus and downtown and decided to see what was happening at the Art Centre. $5 admission is good value but additional donations are encouraged.The centre is currently showing a compelling photo collection of the Kingston Penitentiary which was the highlight of my visit. It was amazing to glance into some of the darkest parts of Canada's history. Also on display was a small fraction of the University's African Art collection, Rembrandt contemporaries (17th century Dutch masters), Agnes Etherington fashion and some Canadian Group of 7 and other Canadian contemporaries. The Canadian exhibit was my next best pick out of the lot though the Rembrandt contemporaries exhibit was very interesting also.Would recommend but don't allocate a ton of time for this smaller space.

This art gallery is small however it is very well laid out and only cost $5 to get in. There are several original Group of Seven pieces along with some Rembrandt's - that alone was worth the price of admission.

The Agnes is quite well-publicized in certain circles. It is a charming building on a beautiful campus and encompasses Agnes Etherington's home as well as the addition. So it has historical value as a building. Agnes was a remarkable woman in many ways and has a special place in the Queen's U story. The Old Masters are worth seeing and a surprise in this small venue. If you get a chance, there is a large clothing collection in the vaults which sometimes is displayed. Definitely a must-see museum.

Surely one of the finest small galleries in Canada is located in Kingston as part of Queen's University. The collection is relatively small, but rich. The permanent collection is varied and the temporary exhibits are thought provoking. You can be assured that your visit will be a rewarding one.

Whether for an event, an exhivition, a visit to the Agnes house or to buy the perfect gift, the Agnes is a world class spot to see modern art as well as works from the greatest artists. A definite must if you visit Kingston, it is set in the beautiful historical campus of Queen's University.

Very nice collection of African art. Also Northern Renaissance painters, including one Rembrandt. Fairly small exhibition space, but the collection rotates. Art rentals avaialable.

There wre only half the galleries open for viewing. I am usually very open to modern art, but some of the pieces were terrible. The one brght sopt for me was the African gallery.I am so glad I only had to pay a Sneior Citizen discount ticket price.

they have many good exhibits and a great art gallery...check for special exhibits throughout the year...there is an admission fee

This institution is the best art museum between Toronto and Montreal (not including Ottawa). The old Dutch collection donated by Dr. Bader is especially noteworthy. They continually mount exhibits of challenging Canadian artists - contemporary and historic - as well.

This gallery deserves a visit. It's away from the city centre and might be easy to miss, though it's located on the campus of Queen's University. The exhibits change regularly, and range from historical artifacts of Kingston, to 16th century Dutch paintings, to African masks and sculptures (just to give a few examples). There is something for every art lover, and also many exhibits challenge visitors to learn more and to stretch their tastes.

This is a relatively small gallery space, but the collection is impressive and they mount interesting special exhibits. If you happen to be in Kingston, or visiting Queen's University, it is definitely worth a visit.

I have visited the Art Center twice now and both times have been delightful. The first time was for a high school class trip to see an exhibit on electronic waste. My last visit was this month to see all of the exhibits being offered at the time. They change regularly so that provides reason to make many visits. All of the pieces of art are astounding and many of them have remarkable stories. Some paintings date back to the early 1600s (Bader exhibit) . The best part of the Art Centre is the house that is attached to the building and was Agnes Etherington's. It is a little gem that takes you back in time and features a piano that allows people to play it on Saturday afternoons. Another great element is that the Art Centre has an art rental place for anyone that is interested. Students are FREE, as well as children and Thursday's are free admission days. Overall, this is a must see as it is a highly respected centre.

All I can see about this museum is that it is one of the most attractive museums I have ever visited. I have been there for three times and still want to revisit the centre.
