We visited on Canada Day, and pretty much had the place to ourselves. The kids explored the various buildings, but were most interested in the boat they could climb into (and which rocks back and forth, as if it were on water). The gift shop is tiny but had some interesting items, and the washrooms are clean. The only "flaw" was that the historical interpreter when we were there so clearly loves her job that we probably got a bit more information than we could really take in.
I visited during Canal Days - it cost just $2 and it was well worth it. Pt. Colbourne has an interesting history and you can get some neat background in a short period of time. The history of the Welland Canal is well presented.
I had an opportunity to visit with my cousin during the Vanal Days festival quaint village like setting I even got to dress up in costumes during that event which was great for picture taking a great place for educational trip with children and anyone wanting a bit of history in the making I had an enjoyable time there
