This is what it is; an amethyst mine where you can see how amethyst is mined and where you can mine some amethyst of your own (the mine sells it by the pound). Better amethyst crystals can be purchased in store. Great view is attached, but the road can be bumpy and dirty.
We took a chance to visit this place and it was the best time ever!! Not touristy just honest to goodness rock hunting ! Lyndon is very knowledgeable and interesting we came home with beautiful rocks can't wait to go back!
Had read about this on Tripadvisor, did not disappoint. had a great time We were visiting from California, just a great place, nice people, were able to pick our own rocks. great for kids, bring your own picks, hammers and gloves. Got some beautiful pieces. Definitely worth the time to find this place.
Found some great rocks. The owner was very nice. there were wash stations to clean your find by the mine and by the exit.
This place was recommended by nearby B&B owners, and I'm glad they did. Blue Point doesn't try to gouge tourists - you just take your bucket and look for rocks. No marketing, no "up-sell." Perfect for us. We spent some nice time and got some nice amethyst. The real mccoy.
Visited the mine on a Sunday. Easyou to find off route 11 out of TB. Last 4 miles are gravel and a bit rough. We were given a tour by the 87 year old owner, who was just a hoot. We the picked thru tailings and found a lot of amethyst. Fun time.
There is not much to describe here. You follow the signs along a fairly level dirt road and arrive in a clearing with a few campers. A short walk and you come to a gouge in the earth surrounded by a plastic fence. In the hole there are the more professional miners and rockhounds working away on the freshly exposed seams. The tailings they throw/blast/push up to the surface are fair game for the amateurs like us. The place has a nice off-the-beaten-path, rustic feel without really being too far off-the-beaten-path.The stuff you can find up around the edges of the pit is not the highest quality, but we found half a bucket full ($10) in an hour and a half that was of decent quality. Pieces we were seeing in Thunder bay for $10-15 each were just laying around for the grabbing at Blue Point. We would have been glad to take more, but having driven up from the states there was only so much room in our trunk for rocks so we took only the nicest ones we found. If we had lots of room we would have gladly taken some of the larger rocks that were encrusted along one face as they would look lovely in a garden. It was really fun to scramble around and break open the rocks. My 6-year-old had a great time and some of the miners showed her some of the things they were finding and even gave her a few smaller, higher quality, crystals. Everyone was really friendly. There were not too many bugs, but I would bring spray since the woods can be chock full of mosquitoes. We brought gloves, some hammers and cold chisels and eye protection. But you can just pick things up if you don't have any tools. Oh yeah, and they are open on Sunday, which is not true of some of the other mines in the area. So if you are planning excursions around Sleeping Giant, this is one that can be done any day of the week.
What a fantastic place! I love amethyst so this place was on my must do list. We had no problem with bugs, likely due to the time of year. It is no frills-here are the buckets, there are some hammer/picks if you need to borrow, and have at 'er. You MUST have eye protection-glasses or sunglasses will do, but safety goggles would be better. Bring your own tools-I really wish I'd thought to bring a chisel. The rocks and gems can be sharp! Have gloves to protect your hands, and sturdy clothes to protect your skin-bits of flying rock gave me a few minor scratches. There is amethyst literally all over the place-you can smash away at a big rock, or search for smaller rocks just laying about. There is a large washtub with scrub brushes so you can get a better idea of the ones you want to keep. At the main entrance there are a couple of display tables with more choice samples if you didn't quite find what you were looking for, and they are reasonably priced.I hope I get a chance to come here again!
Contacted Lyndon asking if I could have a 250 lb piece of Ontario. Man did he deliver. Great price and quality. Had family in Terrace Bay Ontario wanting to steal it. Thanks Lyndon.
This was a great time, we found some treasures. Got a bit dirty but worth it. $20.00 for a very full bucket of gems. We spent 2 1/2 hours enjoying the searching, the gems are easy to find. But we enjoyed the activity without all the touristy hoopla!!!
This place is in the middle of nowhere and no frills. You pull up and talk to the owner (if you can find him), who is a very sweet man. Grab a bucket and get busy. We left with 3 buckets so at $20 a bucket, it was quite a find! They will look great in our landscaping at home. Can't wait to show them off.
We had a GREAT time hunting for amethyst at the Blue Points mine. The owner is very friendly and willing to help or answer any questions you may have. It's only $20 to fill a 2 gallon bucket! We filled 3 buckets all the way up to the handle. I also picked up 2 big chunks and he only charged me $15 for them both. One of them will go in my collection and my wife is displaying the other in our kitchen. Due to past experiences with bugs, we waited until mid August to avoid all the bugs - no bug spray needed at this time of year. We spent about 4 hours at the mine and could have stayed longer, but the teenage girls were ready to leave. Thanks for the great time!Bill
This visit was SUPER fun! We spent several hours there, and the guy who owns it was very helpful. He brought us pails and told us what to look for. We had our own gloves (old garden gloves worked just fine!) so we did pretty well picking up the rocks. Also, bug spray is a MUST. Most of what we found will look very nice in our garden, but a few small pieces will go into my "gem" bowl. It was really fun to wash and scrub the rocks before deciding whether or not to take them. $20 for the bucket was a bargain. We saw some rocks at the "other" mine marked $10, just like some that were part of our bucket. It's a beautiful drive through the forest to get there. The dirt road (about 5 miles) is bumpy, but no problem. I use a cane and the terrain is undoubtedly rough, but definitely do-able. We had a GREAT time.
We love rock picking so we had to stop here. After reading reviews of this place we gave it a try. Had a nice size pail which we overfilled and still only cost $20. Great experience. Never too old to learn and be a kid.Be aware, outhouse only here for those who like running water. lolNo fee. pick some rocks and pay for those only. Half bucket is half price.
A little hard to find the mine. Not the most popular mine in the area, but it yeided some nice stones for us. No admission which is nice (some other mines charge you to enter as well as charge for your rocks). Blue point charged $20 per 2 gallon pail which is quite reasonable if you find some nice stones. If possible, bring a hammer to chip some of the quartz and granite away to maximize your finds.
