We spent a week in Niagara-on-the-Lake in Sept, attending the Niagara Wine Festival and Shaw Festival. Both were fantastic, but we were especially delighted by the plays we saw at the Shaw. The acting, costumes, props, and venue were first rate. New York's Broadway has nothing on the Shaw, and the Shaw is less than half the cost.....especially in view of how well our American dollars spend in Canada these days! NOTL is one of the most beautiful and charming locations in the world, but it does shut down completely after about 10:00 PM. So if you go to the Shaw, be sure and have dinner beforehand at one of the fantastic restaurants.....and be sure to drink the amazing local wine. You will not be disappointed by the wine or the theater or the town!
My wife and I have been members of the Shaw Festival for many years. We first came to Niagara on the Lake in 1989. We especially enjoy the musicals and comedies. We enjoy the ambiance of the small town and visit the many wineries adjacent to the town. We love the small shops and boutiques. The Shaw Festival has a great group of actors, in a repertoire company, many of the actors play different roles in several productions. The Festival also has many workshops and my wife and I loved visiting the many nooks and rooms with behind the scene tours. A question and answer session with Jackie Maxwell was great. We have seen productions in the Royal George and the Court House Theatre. The main theatre also has a nice café, with many interesting and tasty offerings. This year we are anticipating Sweet Charity. Visit the theatre but also visit the town and the surrounding wineries.
This great little town has many B and B's and some extravagant hotels. Great restaurants too, but my favorite part was the fact that there was a trail which led directly to Niagra Falls (18 miles each way) and we could use the community tennis courts! There were a lot of Shaw plays during the Shaw festival. The town is really clean and FULL of flowers and gardens. The people were very friendly.
thoroughly enjoyed the plays we saw. Excellent acting, costumes ....Not much for the younger set though.
We had tickets to see Cabaret at the Festival Theatre during the Shaw Festival. The theatre itself was attractive, but the seats were quite uncomfortable. As for the production, I have seen much better versions. I think the director under utilized the actors' capabilities. Plus, the "in the round" stage proved to provide a lot of distractions that took away from what should be the key focal point. It was a solid 5 out of 10 night out.
Had a very pleasant afternoon at the Shaw Festival theatre watching the Saturday movie. Very comfortable, good value and their movie selection is always well done
This venue is one of the best theatre experiences in North America! My wife and I spend a week in Niagara Falls/Niagara-on-the -Lake every year to celebrate our anniversary. We love to see Niagara Falls, enjoy the outstanding restaurants, visit with our friends at specific wineries and attend three shows (each year) including a musical at the Shaw Festival. We are also subscribers to the Broadway Series in Baltimore. We have seen the same shows years apart in both the U.S. and here. Sometimes, the Canadian version staging is the outstanding one in our eyes. Shaw has never disappointed. In a nutshell, the Shaw Festival is outstanding theatre!
I come every year as I am a theater buff. This theater company is full of wonderful talent. Each theater season is a new and different surprise in terms of variety of subject and magnificent staging.
We saw two shows in two theatres, one the musical Cabaret, very well done and dark, as any play dealing with the rise of Nazism should, the other, Arms and the Man as light and funny as any play by Bernard Shaw. Both theatres offer good seating, acoustics, and sightlines. The town of Niagara on the Lake is also a treat.
This was our first time at the Shaw and we were impressed. The setting is beautiful with an outdoor area. We had excellent seats but it appeared that all the seats were good. The play (Philadelphia Story) was better than expected.
Have been going for years and never cease to be amazed at the excellent quality of the productions. This company always does an outstanding job...multi talented casts, wonderful sets, and costumes....all broadway quality. We see about 6 shows a year and marvel at the quality of the shows produced. We already have our 2015 tickets!
The theater is really nice - well appointed, etc. The actors who performed The Philadelphia Story were not so good.
You simply cannot go wrong with any of the performances at Shaw. Thanks to Mike for his helpful service!!
The theatre is at the south end of Queen Street and an easy walk from anywhere in town. Philadelphia Story was a nice play and we enjoyed it a great deal.
We only went to 1 venue, but our experience was great. If you are there during Shaw Festival, research what you would like to see and just go. After all, it's on the 1000 places to see before you die!
