These sculptures were fantastic in the early years, but they are slowly rotting and having to be taken down. I would not recommend making a special trip to see them.
We obtained a map from the Truro Tourist Office so that we could see some of the tree sculptures but were a bit disappointed to find that so many were no longer as the trees had finally become too dangerous to leave up. Quite hard to spot at times.
The old elm trees of Truro became diseased many years ago with Dutch Elm Disease... instead of just cutting them down (destroying the infected trees was the only known cure), town hired a tree artist who used very special tools (chain saws) to make sculpture all around the town... they are interesting and innovative... fun to walk around town and discover them...
I accidentally came across several of the sculptures while driving around Truro. They are unique and a great way to decorate the town.
Drove around town with the map looking at the sculptures but at times it was difficult to stop and take a photo.
Very nice art work all over downtown! Very nice park in the middle of downtown and these trees are something to see if you are in town!
When the town's Elm trees became infected with Dutch Elm Disease many years ago, the Town promoted this projects through private sponsors. These Sculptures are being dated but show a very important part of Truro's origins and who built this Town. Stop and get the booklet which shows where there are and what they are about. A great way to see the history of this Town.
Certainly adds to the downtown area. They are very well done. The carvers made good use of trees that had to be destroyed because of desease.
This is a good example of turning a tragedy into something positive. Truro lost these trees to dutch elm disease and decided to make the best of things by having local artists create these statues.I had downloaded a brochure before we came showing pictures and locations of the various trees. Unfortunately only about half were actually there. It would be interesting to know what happened to the missing ones.Just as an aside, I thought Truro was a very nice little city.
Always nice to see what the local folks like to do to beautify their community. The sculptings are unique to Truro and fun to look at.
As I walked around the town I took the time to appreciate the artistry of the large tree carvings. There are plaques adorning each work so you can learn about the piece as well as the artist. A very interesting and original idea.
I had read about the tree sculptures but seeing them in person is quite special. They appear randomly throughout town so you never know when you will suddenly spot one. You find yourself instantly smiling and saying, "Wow" or "Hey, look at that one!" The artistry involved in transforming a dead elm tree into an historical or town figure is really quite beautiful. What a creative way to promote a town and its artists.
What can I say about the pleasant surprise around so many corners to see some great Tree Sculptures! Moose Jaw SK has wall murals, Truro has "Good Wood"! Kind of looking like ink blots for us when we shared what we each saw in the various sculptures! Added some fun, and enlightening, discussion to our drives through Truro :)
Amazed to see all the stumps of trees carved into figures of people all through the town, we were told instead of having them cut down all the trees they cut them down to a six foot stump and then some one carves them into figures ,simply interesting to see.
