This is a surprisingly well run educational (but not boring) attraction. If all you want to do is look at pretty things-the butterfly habitat and gift shop will be your favorite places, but there is so much more to experience on the three floors, and great outdoors.Knowledgeable and friendly staff will tell you about the various insects, arachnids and such-even hauling some out of their enclosures for closer inspection. Plenty of static exhibits too. Oh, yes, the outdoors portion is mapped, groomed walk/hike trails. The portion that I experienced was well cared for and provided a nice breath of fresh air. Maps available (free) at the door leading out to the trail.
My family and I visited here. To be honest I wasn't expecting much before we actually got there. It turned out to be really interesting, we all had a lot of fun. The butterflies were really cool. Be sure to check out the gift shop they have some fun things in There too.
This was a very interesting place. The butterfly hatching display and butterfly room were really cool! Butterflies flying all around us and landing on us. The staff was very knowledgable. They took some of the different insects out for people to get a real up close view of them. Lots of tarantulas and even a black widow spider that was donated shortly before we wre there.
This was a real treat during my road trip across the island. The insectarium consists of three floors of live and mounted specimens as well as a butterfly conservatory. There is an excellent attention to detail as everything is carefully categorized, and I came away have learned quite a bit. I was really impressed by the variety of mounted beetles, particularly the attractive iridescent species. I also got the chance to hold a giant leaf insect and enjoyed watching the leaf cutter ants hard at work. Kids will no doubt have a blast but there is lots for adults to enjoy as well.
The butterfly garden is usually the highlight of a visit to the Insectarium, I'm glad you enjoyed it and am also happy hear the staff was helpful. In our gift shop we stock a wide variety of unique items. It is unfortunate that you were unable to find that perfect souvenir (because we do sell some locally made items). We get new and unusual items in our gift shop every year, maybe check back some time in the near future! Thanks Liz for your review.
Glad to hear that the staff was great, we have a lot of pride in our work and we all enjoy what we do. Thanks for your great review!
I'm so happy to hear that the Insectarium was one of your favourite stops in Newfoundland! We hope you can come back soon, we are always getting new insects and displays things are always changing. Thanks for the awesome review Kim!
Thanks for your review Tina! The butterflies and bees are my favourite too, come back and visit soon!
Great for kids. My kids loved the butterflies and holding the stick insect upstairs. The bee hive with the marked queen bee was interesting also.
The butterfly pavilion alone was amazing. The staff were friendly, courteous and very good with helping people and allowing patrons to hold some of the bugs. I held a Stick Bug :D We will be back the next time we come to Newfoundland for sure!!!
We love it here. Every year when we come to newfoundland we make sure to visit the butterflies. My kids love it.
Really neat to hang out and have hundreds of butterflies to photograph, or sit and enjoy them landing on you for a few moments.
Stopped In after a day of hiking gros morne. My second time there and it never fails to disappoint. With everything that's there and knowledgable staff. Great visit. Highly recommended for everyone to go and take this amazing site in.
Make sure you leave a couple hours to view this. The butterfly area just makes you sit down, slow down and let them land on you. How many can you get to land at once :)
The insectarium is a very fun place for children. This is our second year holding the family membership and it is worth every penny. The butterfly garden is always particularly fun for my daughter... they flutter around everywhere. She is a little nervous when they fly around her face but she is so intrigued and mystified by the butterflys. The bee hive, ants, and toads always keep her attention and the addition of a 'kids corner' this year really caps off the trip. Occasionally we will grab a ice cream... they don't disappoint with some very large servings. One scoop is enough even for an adult. This will continue to be a great place to bring our daughter.
