exceptional view of the river and the chance to take the drop in a cable car was worth the detour. this is a trip worth taking just for the pics from the vewiing platform down to the river
Had a motorhome trip up there back growing up. Fun trip, impressive views on those giant suspension bridges..
When visiting BC and planning to drive, add this to your trip it is spectacular. For the more adventurous there is white water rafting here.Take the cable car as the ride down is breathtaking. Be sure to read about the significance of this area to the early settlers. Not that far from Vancouver.
Hell's Gate has a mountain tram that takes you down form main Hwy down to the raging River below. You might wanna go white water rafting but think twice as this River is more like white knuckle rafting and anyone not hanging on might get lost in the raging waters. At bottom of the tram is a pleasant communal area with gift shop, restaurant, ice cream parlor and historical reports of Hell's Gate all while you walk around the canyon overlooking raging river. Loved every moment of it.
Just another attraction along the road ,but worth the stop , great history displayed , lots of things to see and do, and if you like ghosts there is something for everyone. Excellent views of very powerful water. Gifts and food available too.
We arrived at Hells Gate one half hour before opening. The attendant was there and said we should stick around and we are so very glad we did. It was AWESOME and we would highly recommend it. The staff was very friendly and recommended other stuff for us to do. We really enjoyed the suspension bridge as well. A must see!!!
There's a large parking area pull-out just south of the pedestrian overpass. Walk around the metal gate and down the gravel road. The sign says it's 1 km to the river. There are a number of switchbacks, cross the railroad tracks and you're there. You can take the AirTram back to the top if you don't want to walk back up. While good walking shoes would be best, we saw people making the trip in flip-flops. If it's a hot day, take a water bottle. You can walk across the bridge at the bottom to visit the AirTram facilities and concessions.
The tram ride at Hells Gate gets you up close and personal with the narrowest and deepest part of the river. Riding down into the canyon with modern trains running on either side and the raging river below is amazing. And there are great facilities down in the canyon even if they are mostly tourist oriented. You get a great history lesson and a chance to see and learn about the area.
My family really enjoyed our visit to Hells Gate. As a child I traveled the Canyon frequently and never got a chance to see it. The tram ride is breathtaking as is the story of the rock fall and how it formed, and how they helped the salmon travel up the Fraser. The suspension bridge is a bit unnerving, but OK once you get used to it.The drive to get there is scenic too. Another example of Beautiful British Columbia!!There are no washroom facilities at the top.If you like this sort of thing also visit the Othello Tunnels in Hope.
If you happen to be traveling through the Fraser canyon, you have to stop here. The tram ride over the Fraser river is absolutely breathtaking. Not a whole lot to do at the bottom, a few shops & really good restaurant. But trust me, worth it!!!
We had a spare day in May so we decided to visit a tourist/historical site that we hadn't seem for a great many years. Hell's Gate is an amazing site to visit for a day trip from Vancouver. The tram ride across the Fraser River is neat experience but the shops and restaurant make it a place well worth visiting. You can even take your dog! There are some great buys in the gift shop, great ice cream and fudge and good food at the restaurant. There were also some wildlife photo ops - hummingbirds, blue jays, squirrels, all were close and made for good pictures. When you approach the tourist area, look at it from the gondola and notice that the whole complex is built out over the river on wooden pilings!
It was a wonderful experience. However I wished there was a more even balance of female to male staff members.
I can't believe it took so long to stop at Hell's Gate Air Tram. I guess when you're a "local", you assume you've seen it all. This is a must do whether you live here or are a visitor. They even accommodated our dogs! They loved it too. Just do it!
Great historic site, air tram fab with the promise of fudge and ice cream from the other side. Great views from all over the site.
drove pass hells gate many times going to and back from work and never stopped finally took time out to check it out. what a surprise the view is breath taking. make sure to bring your camera you don't what you may see.
