I love taking this road. It's one of those twisty windy roads that has spectacular views, hairpin curves, plummeting cliffs, and a breath-taking lake in the middle. Even in the winter, the road is maintained very well. One of my favorite things about the road is that when you are driving from east to west, you start in a northern desert climate, and when you reach the other end, you are in temperate rainforest.
I am a motorcycle rider who leaves Florida in the summer to meander around North America. A number of years ago I was in Canada headed west. A Canadian that I was chatting with recommended the Duffy Lake Road to me. I so enjoyed the journey that I have returned a number of times. It is something special.
Girlfriend and I went skiing in whistler and did a short day trip during the winter. Spectacular views.
The twisty road allows you to take your time. This a great way to come home from 100 Mile House. The scenery is spectacular Take your time and enjoy
The BC forest Service maintains 4 free camp sites on the road. Rogers Creek with 14 sites, Gott Creek with 4 sites, Cottonwood with 14 site and Cinnamon with 11 sites. All are on Cayoosh Creek. From Lillooet it is 22 km to Cinnamon and 34 km to Rogers Creek. Coming from Pemberton we were on top of Rogers Creek before we saw the sign so we missed it totally. We stayed the night at the next one (Gott) and checked out the other two the next day. You couldn't ask for much more if your a fan of Forestry camp sites like we are. The following web page will get you more info. http://www.sitesandtrailsbc.ca/Also, at the end of the road at Seaton Lake there is a free site run by BC Hydro at Lillooet. I was going to add pics to this until I saw the web site above, it has enough.Absolutly beautiful drive, great road but steep at either end and getting very busy, camp ground were almost empty though (mid Sept.).
Had the truck, great place to get some real use out of it, the scenery was only stunning, and seems like there was no-one around when we were there- look out for some bald eagles!
If your heading into the interior of B.C. and have the time, take this road. Beautiful scenery and a wild drive at times. Lots of steep grades. Make sure you have a newer car or something in great shape.
Beautiful views! Can be a little slow in the summers with RVs out there, and good snow in the winter, but it's an excellent connection to Pemberton.
The road is spectacular, crossing through the heart of the Coast Range. Allow 2 hours between Pemberton and Lillooet when road conditions are good. Portions are narrow and steep (many grades up to 13%) so use low gears and don't overdo the brakes. Highly recommended.
Winter maintenance good. Road clear. Watch for fallen rocks with freeze-thaw weather. Take lots of window washing fluid and enjoy the beautiful winter scenery.
Where is Duffy Lake Road? It's route 99, if traveling from Whistler, it starts just after Pemberton. It's the main highway. When I traveled it in early May, I had the road entirely to myself on a Sunday afternoon. I only saw one other vehicle and it was a truck near Lilooet. This is a scenic mountain drive filled with lovely views of a lake, a glacier and unspoiled wilderness. Most of the road was in good condition and paved although this is not a road to take if you don't have the time as it is quite windy and twisty in places. Also, on the day I visited, there was actually a dusting of snow on the road berms at the highest elevations. Take care and make sure your vehicle is prepared for the conditions.
This road is amazing in good weather and hell on wheels in bad weather. Just make sure you pick your season. Lots to see with great views coming into Lillooet.
Most of the road is in good condition with upgrades from the Olympics. There are switch-back at both ends of the road which can be troublesome on breaks, so use your transmission to do some of the work. Your passengers might get car sick if you don't stop a few times so take your time and enjoy the views. Lots of cool places to stop for a break including a few outhouses along the way. It trip is worth the effort...
Great scenery, many different climate and mini geography zones. Road all paved and in very good condition. Gas up in Pemberton, if you follow road signs (eg. curves, hills, speed zones etc.) and use common sense there is no problem. Best to allow time to appreciate wonderful B. C. at its best. Choose a sunny clear day if possible.
The famed Duffy Lake Rd. is worth the trip. Gorgeous scenery--incredible glacier views from the hwy even. Be sure to have a reliable car for this one. A lot of graded hills of 11% or more.
