This is a great place not far from the Downtown area where you enjoy the silence that comes with being along the lake shore, although this is slightly disturbed by the trains coming past every so often. However this doesn't seem to affect the birds that live here. We saw a yellow headed blackbird or two as well as red winged blackbirds and were especially lucky to witness an Eagle fly overhead as we were returning to the car. Certainly worth a visit if you are into bird watching or just want to experience another beautiful, peaceful area of the town.
This was our second trip to Salmon Arm, and both times we visited the Park several times. The first time was in June whilst this was September, so the birding experiences were different, but both very enjoyable. June is probably more rewarding as the Western Grebes are still pairing up and "dancing" on the water, both the Yellow Headed and Red Winged Blackbirds, and many other birds are displaying and nesting.SABNES (Salmon Arm Biodiversity Nature Enhancement Society) are responsible for much of the habitat care. They have a hut and display in the summer months, and sometimes lead nature walks there.
Peter Jannink Nature Park was a quiet and lovely "rest break" for us on a recent BC road trip and stop in Salmon Arm. The Park is located on, in, and near a beautiful marshland shore of Shuswap Lake.Located just a short walk from the downtown area of Salmon Arm (with easy access across from Narcisse and Hudson Streets), the visit to the Park provided a very pleasant break and nature diversion from our driving for a while, and we sure enjoyed the sights & sounds (walking trails, gardens, bird viewing areas, many birds - waterfowl and land - the marshland, and Lake). On the initiative of the Shuswap Naturalist Club, this area of the city was converted to a city park in 1999. The park was named in honour of Peter Jannink, the head city gardener, Club member, and active bird-watcher, after his passing in 2003.A lovely, quiet, and natural respite/retreat from the heart of downtown Salmon Arm. We were sure happy and fortunate to have stopped and experienced it.
