The views are absolutely breathtaking. You need to go on a clear sunny day for best viewing. The road is very bumpy..go slow..I've seen sports cars up there... It is so worth the time. Bring your camera & a lunch. Don't forget running shoes.
If you have time to take the steep drive up Mount Maxwell Provincial Park it is well worth the winding drive. No problem in a regular sized car and no four wheel drive needed. The summit offers incredible views over southern Saltspring Island, Vancouver Island and all the way to the San Juan Islands. Absolutely gorgeous and there are picnic tables if you decide to take a lunch along.
breathtaking view on a foggy day - the whole lower mainland was fogged in and we drove to the top and had an amazing view
Nothing beats the scenery from the top of Mt. Maxwell, specially on a clear sunny day. We've always found it to be a highlight of any trip we've taken to Salt Spring Island. The road up to the top is a bit run-down and if there is any snow on the upper reaches it can be a bit nail biting getting to the top. If you persevere and make it all the way up you won't be disappointed. Great photo ops abound... Picnic tables are available, so if it's a nice day, take a lunch.
You'll go out of your way and travel the last 4 km. over a rough road to get to the viewpoint of Mt Maxwell, but it worth the effort. a very short uphill walk from the parking area gets you a spectacular view of the Gulf Islands. Even on a gray winter's day with waning light this is still a thing to do.
peaceful and gorgeous, what's not to love? The road is to rough.... Get your body moving:) What a fantastic hike!!
Make sure you go when its dry and or use a 4 Wheel drive, or be in good shape to hike up the road. Its worth the effort though, the vista is amazing and untouched.
I enjoyed the farmers markets held here! :) Happy people everywhere. Clean and enjoyable.....i will return
Mt Maxwell is the highest point on the island and while it was only 2000 feet the view to Vancouver Island made the trip up worth while.
The view at the top of this Peak (apparently it is not actually called Mt Maxwell on the maps, but all the locals call it Mount Maxwell) is fantastic. The road is really pretty rough, but I have seen people get up to the top in tiny rental cars, so it can be done if you are careful. I have also seen people bicycling up to the top of this peak, which is pretty heroic. It's great for hiking, please leave it cleaner than you found it, it is a beautiful place and worth looking after.
For anyone complaining about the drive up to Mt Maxwell, get out and WALK!!! I for one was thrilled that the roads were dreadful hoping it would encourage people to hike. There are trails not far from the road to hike up. The uphill climb seemed endless at times and were it not for the beautiful vegetation, immense tree canopy, I may have given up. But I forged on and after 90 minutes, made it to the parking lot of the top. Just beyond that, up the hill of trees and rock is the most splendid view you can imagine. Open sky and an overview of what seems like eternity. It's breathtaking and marvelous!! Worth every heart pounding uphill step to get there!!!
Highway and the Province should be embarrassed to have their name associated with this location. The lack of maintenance on the road up to the park is unacceptable. Facilities at the top are limited and there is no park staff or enforcement so you have people making and leaving a mess, playing loud music and disturbing others, drinking in public. Limited picnic facilities and poor washrooms. Until they fix (or at least grade) the road - avoid it.
Drove up with our pickup...what a climb...The view on top is breathtaking. The islands, the ocean, the mountains. Really worth to climb up!!!
A tough road to get to the top, but once your there the views are amazing! Take a picnic lunch and enjoy the solitude at 2000 feet.
We rode our bikes to the top - it was exhilarating to say the least but WELL worth the effort for the fantastic views
