The Shadbolt Centre for the Arts is located in Deer Lake Park between the Burnaby Art Gallery and the Burnaby Village Museum. It is a lovely open architectural design set in a wonderfully serene location overlooking Deer Lake.We enjoyed the art and exhibits located throughout the building, particularly some of the children's art located in the little Encores Café on the ground level. It is very low key, and you don't need to buy anything to wander around and enjoy the art. I would allot about 30 minutes to see the art and exhibits... or years to take some of the wonderful classes. Add time if you want to grab a bite to eat.The listings of art activities and classes for all ages was quite impressive, as was the list of upcoming events. I wish I could stay and see many of them. Honestly, I don't think their website is the best representation of what is available there, but not a bad place to start. The part of this multi-level building that faces the lake is a wonderful location for sitting and enjoying the view and weather on a nice day. It overlooks an open expanse of grass and trees with some children's playground structures for their exploration. It is a mini-escape from the city that would be perfect for reading (or writing) a good book.If you just discovered that the Burnaby Village Museum is closed during the winter, or are on your way to the Burnaby Art Gallery.... stop by the Burnaby Arts Council's Deer Lake Gallery and the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts.If you are local, I would definitely check out the art and performance classes for children and adults, as well as the list of upcoming events. This looks like a Burnaby gem!
The art here is nice to look at but you can take in a Theatre and have lunch at Encores too. They have a good selection of Coffee drinks and when the Theatre is on you can get Beer and Wine. Shadboldt Centre has Concerts in the Park and People get married here too.
Dramatics, dance and music are one of the few activities you can get your kids engaged into here. Plus it is a great setting to relax and enjoy the beautiful park while you wait as a parent...!
Great arts programs for young and old and great staff. All set in a beautiful and inspirational park setting. Situated next to the Heritage Village Museum.
An amazing building with super design and architecture. The local theatre puts on excellent travelling and local pro/amateur productions. On the weekends this place is being used by all types of social groups and children wanting to learn how to dance or ballet. The theatre experience is wonderful.
Open air, natural ampitheatre. Home to the Burnaby Blues and Roots festival, arts and crafts programs and backs up against Deer Lake and its walking trails.
Very new building and modern look. Took piano lessons here for many years where the teachers are highly qualified. Great outdoor grounds too for walks or outdoor concerts.
The beautiful multi-purpose centre is located in a lovely park setting with mountain & city views. There are both outdoor & indoor activities scheduled year round for families, adults & kids. The Centre features art exhibits, dancing, singing, performances, classes, food shows & tastings, lectures, & festivals. Their website offers a wide variety of options and the admission is either free or very reasonable. There is lots of accessible parking as well.
Good coffee and great sandwiches. This is a great place to get a snack while waiting for children, classes. Pretty healthy foods-sandwiches, soups, homemade sweets, coffee.
The place is plagued by municipal thought instead of free thought. It needs real creativity instead of the canned bureaucratic kind. More like a simplistic recreation centre than an arts centre. The Shadbolts did not know it was being named after them and it was something they did not want [verified before both parties died].
Shadbolt is not universally enjoyed, esp. by art lovers who want classic representaionalism. Such folks should stay away, or (better) prepare for a very different experience. The Centre displays a significant amount of Jack;s work, along with some up-and-comers that we'll be seeing more of in the years ahead. The Centre is well laid-out, easy to move through, and the staff don't rush you. Make sure you've got a couple of hours.
I have been a student of the Shadbolt for several years now and love to take courses in pottery from the wonderful and talented instructors that work at the Centre. My children have also enjoyed piano, violin and singing lessons from various teachers during the past 10 years. We have also found that the summer programs have been very good quality and value for our children to help fill our summer time calendar with worthwhile and fun things to do. The facility has an extensive offering of classes and for the most part, the instructors have been very helpful and talented. The theatre productions that we have attended at the centre have also been very good quality and there is alot of differsity to choose from.
We have seen Odds as well as the Buddy Holly story. The prices were very good and there are no bad seats. The venue is also very child friendly for most events,
We take dance and art classes here. I am happy to pay to have my children dance while I walk the lake, smell the flowers, stroll the gardens, and sit by the fire. This venue is outstanding! We attend the rhododendron festival and seasonal celebration here also. We go to craft fairs, art shows, and theatre performances.A beautiful venue for our talented local artists
