I love visiting Burnaby Village Museum - particularly around the holidays when it's decorated for Christmas! There's a lot to see and do, whether it's seeing a blacksmith demonstration, visiting the school or making butter in the old farm house. It can be a bit boring for little children, but older ones would find it entertainment. My boys love the old fashion carousel and running around the streets.
Although their advertising is often aimed t kids, this is really an interesting place to visit for adults also. Always something going on, especially displays of period activities by well versed workers in period costumes. And of course no one should miss a ride on the Carousel! At Christmas, the lighting is impressive, and well worth a visit.
A lively historical village with knowledgeable volunteers acting and dressing the part in the shops, school house, printing press, bank, blacksmith shop, farmhouse, and so on. There are often family activities going on, but lots to see even if you don't have kids. And a beautiful historic carousel and a fully restored inter-urban tram to boot. The wooden chapel can be rented for weddings. Admission is free, small fee for the carousel. It is by Deer Lake which is very scenic, and I often go and wonder through the pretty gardens down the road by the Art Gallery after my visit to the village.
Burnaby Village Museum has attractions for every member of the family. The carousel is specifically worth mentioning. It's good fun.
BVM is a very will kept and interesting place to take the family. It is safe for children of all ages. They can run around and have lots of fun in the museum. There is a carousel that cost a few dollars to ride and its very beautiful with the lovely restored horses. The Christmas decorations are beautiful and Halloween has its own decorations too. Summer time is fun fun fun! You can have a nice snack or big meal at the Ice Cream Parlour. The food is good and prices are reasonable for a tourist attraction.
I was a bit skeptical of this place when we first moved to the area but several things have really made this a great family field trip destination. We go several times a year.1. Price: free! The City of Burnaby has made this free to visitors, but it's only open certain periods during the year (Christmas, Spring break and summer break) so check the website to make sure of your dates before heading down.2. The scavenger hunts. They have really well-thought out scavenger hunts for kids (and grown ups) for each season they are open. My kids love coming down and running through the place to find where everything is hidden and each season/ year it is different. The Twelve Days of Christmas is especially awesome as are all the gorgeous lights. Make sure to come at night if you are here over winter break!3. The Carousel rides. Not free, about $2 per person/ ride. Very awesome. Beautifully restored and each horse has a story. This carousel goes FAST! And the horses are very high off the ground. If you get dizzy, pick an inside horse. If you are with little kids, they have some stationary little horses that the wee ones can ride. Alternatively, there are stationary sleigh benches as well. 4. The interpreters. These volunteers take their jobs of retelling history very seriously. In period costume and reciting interesting facts like no-ones business. Check out the tram and the school house. Two of our faves! 5. You can buy snacks and meals and ice cream at the restaurant.
It was fun for the whole family. We had a relax walk and picked up new information of what pioneer life was like. The entrance fee is reasonable
So pleased you visited last summer and took time to share your experience. We strive to be better than 'ok' or even 'very good'; we aim for excellence. What can we do to make your next visit more enjoyable?
The Village has free admission in 2015, the carousel rides require a ticket purchase. Check the date you are visiting as the museum is not open year-round. You can expand your visit with a walk to Deer Lake which is less than a block away. This can be a very reasonable family fun day if you avoid buying food or mementos. Plan to ride that Carousel though, it is great fun. Bring a picnic and walk to the picnic area at Deer Lake, feed the ducks and watch the turtles and squirrels. There is lots of free parking in and around the Museum if you drive.
We visited here right after Christmas and they still had all the lights up. Admission was free that day but you had to buy tickets to ride the carousel. There was also a scavenger hunt the kids could participate in. We toured a good portion of the village and there were some demonstrations going on like in the blacksmith shop and print shop. Was a good educational experience. Would have liked to have stayed longer but had to get to my son's hockey game.
My family visited the Burnaby Village Museum this past December for its Christmas festivities, and we had a splendid time.As many reviewers have pointed out, the museum features heritage buildings and other exhibits dating back to the 1920s (or older). We arrived a little late, and with a young toddler who needed to have dinner and sleep soon, we did not spend nearly as much time as we wanted to stroll through the place, and to stop and carefully look at the different displays. That said, we were still awed by the horse-shoe making demonstration, and just the overall feel of the buildings almost a century old. We came to this museum mainly for the Christmas lights, and were not disappointed. Sure, it was not as spectacular as that of a place like the Van Dusen Garden, but hey, the Burnaby Village Museum is FREE, so what can you expect? The lights here were still beautiful; there was still a choir singing Christmas carols and other holiday songs. The atmosphere was still festive. My son enjoyed pointing at the lights from all over, and posting in front of the lit-up deer, bears, and angels. One of the highlights of the evening was a ride on the 100-year-old carousel. It was my son's first ever ride on one, and needless to say, he was fascinated by the experience. I was never a big fan of anything carnival, but I must admit, it was quite fun. It seems like the museum puts on different themed-displays throughout the year, so I definitely have the incentive to bring my family back for a visit during different times of the year. My personal suggestion for other travelers would be to arrive a little early so you can spend time taking in the scene and looking at the different exhibits. It's a place you can lost yourself for hours.
Spent a VERY rainy afternoon in the past. It takes you back to the 1920s Buildings, clothes, furniture, as though it was still that time. Staff are in costume and very knowledgeable particularly the lady in the printshop. Great Christmas decor, sheep in wooly jumpers! And a carousel, great fun for all the family.
We went to Burnaby Village in December, to visit the Heritage Christmas event, and it was beautiful. The village is all decorated and festive, there was live music in three places, and of course the carrousel was a must. The only downside was the coffee shop, we ate there and found the food overpriced and sub-par.
Great Place to bring the family ,charming and lots to see and do. A ride on the hundred year-old carousel is a must.
I've lived in burnaby all my life and I never been to The Burnaby Village Museum and I'm glad I got to experience it. I went for the Halloween Haunted Village and it was a very fun night, picturesque village and very knowledgeable and friendly staff. We rode the 102 year old wooden carasoul which was pretty amazing.
