I went to this railway with my family twice during 2014 and what a great time we had. A super half day out which our grandchildren loved. The staff on the railway are so friendly and made us smile and laugh throughout the journey. In respect of increasing our enjoyment, I wish the railway continued on the trackbed down into Penticton with some brilliant views of Okanagan Lake - perhaps a thought for the future? What an attraction that would be for the thousands of tourists who come here each year.
We have taken many of our visitors for a ride on the KVR. Our only disappointment on a couple of occasions was that our seats were on the upside of the train and our view of the valley was very poor. I think it should be imperative that at the end of the line the travellers should trade sides so all passengers (we pay the same price) get to enjoy the view of the valley. Very disappointed the last couple of trips.
Scenic views, even offer vegetarian foods at the dinner afterwards, they should have golf carts or a trolley to take people to Summerland Sweets to have dessert which is just up ahead and they have the best jams, ice cream, and special gifts.
Family outing to ride on the oil driven steam train. A step back into the past with lots of fun.The music, songs and dance were great fun.
Very wide well mIntained trail. An old railway track that was converted to a trail. Awesome old wooden trestles over valleys.
You have to do the train robbery ride...it is so much fun and must do for all ages...great experience for everyone and great BBQ after the robbery
Well worth the visit. Both Summer and special Winter rides are excellent. Get specific directions or use GPS. Great source of entertainment and 'feel' for old trains.
Where else are you going to be able to enjoy a scenic authentic steam train ride through beautiful vineyards and orchards with a spectacular view of Okanagan lake? Not just that but you are travelling on the original route with an original engine! All built around 1912 or so. Obviously they are refurbished. I went on the day where the 'Garnet Valley Gang' stopped the train for a 'robbery'. It is all done by volunteers and the 'sheriff' made all the kids deputy sheriffs. The 'gang' cam up along side the train on horse back. The kids loved it!Afterwards, they served a delicious BBQ. What a fun and unique afternoon.
we didn't hike or bike but will next time.Drive a bit bumpy and long but lots of families there so am assuming the hike or bike is quite easy
This was my first experience on the train ride. I thought I would have enjoyed the experience more from the outside than the inside of the train. I thought it was okay, I suppose I expected more. I found we were at a stand still more than the train was moving, and the actual time the train is moving is not long. I thought it was a cute ride, great for kids and families. We did the Wild Wild West ride. The western things dragged on a bit...and when the cowboys came on the train to rob it, that was fun, but I thought it was a bit much they came and asked for donations 3 times. The train is beautiful, and I think they have done an amazing job maintaining it and preserving the history of the railroad. I thought the experience was average, I'm glad I did it, but I doubt I would do it again.
Definitively a must do while visiting the Okanagan Valley. It was one of my favorite attraction in the region. The trip on steamed train, the panoramic view of the Summerland valley, the track going through the vineyard they even have someone playing banjo.. it was so charming my parents were really delighted and it was a nice way to get a bit of history on the region. I recommend this attraction for all ages
Okay, now this is a fun activity for all ages! The conductor gives commentary during the gorgeous panoramic ride over the valley (lots of opportunities for photo ops), one of the staff wheels along a snack and beverage cart, and there is even a banjo player to provide some period music (of sorts) to help get everyone in the mood. Locals wave at the train as it huffs and puffs along the railway, and I just loved listening to the steam engine do its thing. There are a few breaks along the way to let everyone stretch and take pictures, and I honestly didn't mind at all the return trip being repetitive - after working my camera, it was nice just to sit back and take it all in and relax. Don't expect anything mind-blowing here, but the Steam Railway is just a fun little distraction that will leave you with a grin plastered on your face. Good luck not enjoying this ;) OH, and don't be afraid to try the open cars, they are great. Also, if you are bringing children, try for one of the train robbery ridings - didn't do it myself, but I bet it would be a lot of fun.
Our first experience on this train ride, pulled by, over a 100 year old steam locomotive and refurbished remodeled cattle (open air) cars. This ride took 2hrs. including a staged train robbery. (They collected any change people had in their pockets, which went to local charity. It was very exciting. The scenery was spectacular and the ride was a lot of fun. After the train ride, we had very delicious bbq dinner with lots of food. the total capacity of the train was 280 passengers. It is a great experience for families with young children. The children are really entertained well. They have train rides with out dinner and with dinner at an extra cost.
...or rent one. A fine ride on a good day. Great views and good exercise for the whole family. You can even get a helicopter to drop you at the start of the Kelowna section. The section from Chute Lake to Penticton is only for the very fit or those that like pain.
Fun ride on vintage cars and the stream engine. There is a live commentary during the ride. The ride is pretty expensive though, around $80 for the family of 2 adults and 2 children. They say it is a 90 minutes ride, but is really 20-25 minutes return. Rest of the time is for photo taking off the train. Regardless, I liked it. I would not do it again, but recomend people try it once atleast.
