for a lovely drive go here. Take a picnic and enjoy. Water. Mountains. Boat rides in the summer. Skating in the winter. Mountains at its best. A great day trip and only 10 min from Banff.
Minnewanka is good for fishing with the right gear, if you don't own at least a 16 ft boat with a decent draft and good engine - grab a canoe and stick to the west end at the dock. If you go down the lake and head east and the weather kicks up it IS very dangerous! The lakers in there are nice but unless you know how to jig or have a good down rigger don't bother trying. The fly fishing is not that great either ......
Beautiful lake just near banff downtown. Worth a stop and take some pictures or walk the trail along the lake. Theres a lot of parking space and this is not as crowded as other atrractions in banff.
We did the Stewart Canyon Trail on a sunny winter's day. An easy walk - almost zero elevation change- with great views opening up all along the trail. Highly recommended.
We were in Banff and driving around on a non ski day. Drove through this area, nice scenic drive, saw large herd of elk, and walked around the lake areas. Very close to town and worth the effort.
This was pretty cool. Flew over the lake and it's surrounds which is weird considering at its base used to be a town before it was flooded. Great scenery as you would expect on the way there, at the lake and the flight back-get the front seat!
This is a place you need to see,its totally amazing.Great drive to get to this place the views are to die for.car park is a little small the place gets full.when we were there the lake was frozen and they had just cut a hole for divers to go in you need to see this place.
The lake was frozen when we went, so we were able to walk across and watch the brave souls ice diving and take in the stunning scenery.
The lake is so beautiful and the mountain view is stunning. Met a herd of more than 30 Wapati? The regular washroom was closed in the winter time. However, the no flush toilet outhouse is available. Best time to go still summer.
The lake looked like something from a movie - it was completely frozen over and it was almost a white out day so was quite creepy looking. The highlight was most defiantly seeing the wild elk grazing near the side of the road. A good place to spot wildlife - even the winter. Worth the drive out there but probably much better on a clear winters day than a white out one.
When we were at the Columbia Icefields Discovery Centre, we booked a package of excursions as it worked out cheaper than booking individually. Along with the Glacier adventure and the Glacier Skywalk, we also had tickets for the Banff Gondola on Sulphur Mountain, and a boat trip on Lake Minnewanka (great name, but unfortunately not pronounced as its spelt, try Mih-ney-worn-car ).Was quite impressed by the boat captain, who gave the commentary in French to a Quebecois couple, mostly talking to them and occasionally steering the boat. We had the English commentary from the assistant, which did not seem as well polished, but it could have been that we were suffering from lake fatigue. The lake itself is scenic enough, but it suffers in comparison with the other lakes in the Canadian Rockies such as Maligne, Moraine and Lake Louise.
My husband and I took a trip down from Edmonton to visit Banff, as we've never really experienced it much whenever we've gone for conferences. Lake Minnewanka is absolutely beautiful! The short route was closed when we went, but the longer route was scenic and enjoyable! You see Two Jack Lake along this route. We were able to take our little guy out onto the frozen lake, see the frozen methane bubbles under the ice, be surrounded by the mountains and capture lots of gorgeous pictures. We'd love to come back in the summer and take the boat tour. We'd definitely visit here again anytime of the year. A refreshing spot!
Very nice change of pace as one could actually get out on to the lake. The tours provide a lot of information about the area.
This scenic driving loop is a good "rest" from hiking. There were adorable mountain sheep babies with moms along the lake, even in the parking lot so easy to photo.
