Very interactive displays in the main building. Great walk for parents with youngin's! Kids get to actually play and have fun
Nice boardwalk for those interested in birds . All trails a good bet and diversion . Limited parking.
Spent a pleasant afternoon at the nature centre. We played in the indoor playground to begin our visit, and checked out the honeycomb exhibit. Then we went to see the bugs, snakes, salamander and habitat display in the other room. After this, we borrowed some nets, and went to the small pond to see what we could catch! Lots of different bugs and dragonflies. A pleasant spot. Worth a visit! There is a picnic area, and you can see the the train from Fort Edmonton going by.
My son has loved the play area in the nature centre since he was 2 and he is 4 now and still loves to go. I tried him in a few classes but found them too slow to hold his attention,
Located right by Fort Edmonton Park, it offers information about nature, activities for children of all ages. A nice gift shop with lots of literatureabout the River Valley. Our Walking Club meets there at the beginning of every season.A great place to learn about how to look after our natural resources and to respect and love nature.Very informative & educational.A pleasure to go there.
We hadn't been here for a long time (not since they renovated), and we were really pleasantly surprised to see the new indoor playground for young kids! My daughter had a great time, and she'll probably enjoy it even more when she gets older (she's under 1 year old right now). I like that they're free to go in if they're under 2, so that's the good value part...and I was free to enter with her!! Remember to bring socks- we were idiots and wore just sandals. But you can buy socks on site for $1.50, not bad at all. The rest of the centre is also pretty kid-oriented, but it's so nice for school groups and brownie troupes, etc. The animal displays are great for little ones. I've never gone walking on the outdoor trails nearby, but I've heard great things.
I walked over there and looked in a bit, but they wanted admission, and there appeared to be not much for adults, and, like some of the other places in the area, a real price for admission without much to offer. But, like Fort Edmonton, the surrounding areas connected to it made it very nice to be near. There were paths near the Nature Center that were quite pretty, and nice grass lawns and easy access to a bus that connected to the Light Rail system. So, I was glad the facility was there, due to the scenery and landscape that grew, and was molded, around it.
We were there for a birthday party and it was a lot of fun and also educational. They do a great job organizing things for kids to do. Its a great area for geocashing.
Unfortunately, The John Janzen Nature Centre is definitely more a children’s facility; especially with the recently added nature themed play area. This makes it awesome for kids, especially since they appear to really enjoy facility with both the educational and play area. However, when I examined the summer educational programs they appear to be more orientated for kids, thus not leaving much for adults. The only real adult activity is the informative compost education centre during the weekends. Granted, I guess there is really not much more an a facility such as this can provide to adults. After all, we did learn all this during our Kindergarten to Grade 12 years. (As I was explained to by the super friendly man at the front desk this facility has visits many field trips during the school year) Overall, I am giving it four stars because of the great opportunities for kids to learn and learning about the really neat summer interpretive programs for them. Although, I must point out what I find baffling about the facility is why the Royal Museum of Alberta has such an awesome Nature exhibit. This display would make far more sense at the John Janzen Nature Centre.
This is now an educational center for children. There are trails and such, but there is no longer anything at the center for adults and older children
The indoor playground is great, lots to keep the kids entertained for a few hours in the winter.During the summer it's great to visit the pond and do the hiking trails in the area, it's very easy to spend a whole day in the area.
They offer all kinds of camps for all ages of kids. They all come out wiser due to the excellent staff they have. They offer birthday party rooms to rent and have a play area for the kids to bounce off the excess sugar energy. A fun day for the family
We stopped in at this centre after spending lots of time in the car. It was an excellent place for us to visit with our 5 and 7 year old. There was a really fun play room to discover and run around in. There was also a room with lots of hands on activities and information about nature and local animals. We even had a bit of time to discover tadpoles and butterflies in and around the pond outside. A perfect activity for our family and well priced at $6 for each child (parent is free with a child).
Went here when I was a child; remember there were nature experts there; it was the place to inquire about local nature questions; very small area devoted to nature and very big toddler time room with things to climb and tunnels, blocks to build; if you have a toddler this is the place but if you want to know about nature well there is a bit to see but not as I remembered as a child.
We visited here during the winter, and there is a nice indoor play area (wheelchair friendly) that my kids could run around and burn off pent up winter energy. When they were done with that, we could go into the other side of the centre and learn about lots of local wildlife. My kids enjoyed petting a snake, and checking out all of the little activities. There is a bat cave which my kids liked. The cost is so reasonable - $6 per child (adults free with child). We are looking forward to going during the summer and see what else we can discover around there.
