This museum is quite lovely representation of modern Canadian art. There are four buildings that are connected by underground walkways. You must enter through the main doors to be able to access the other buildings. They keep the surrounding building doors locked. This museum is not the standard historical art gallery but more of a collection of local modern art.
This is a great place to spend a few hours. There is a lot to see, and it is a lovely place to have a quiet break from the weather. Very good shop, too. We were lucky in that it happened to be school holidays and admission was free. There is a lot to see, I would recommend not trying to see everything in one visit.
We recently visited the Museum to take in the Andy Warhol exhibit. When we arrived we also found that they had an exhibit of Benjamin Constant. We decided to take in both. The Warhol exhibit was excellent. It was a little smaller than I thought it would be, but still very interesting and took us about a 2 hours to go through to see and read everything. We then headed over to the Benjamin Constant exhibit. We were unfaimilar with this artist, but were very impressed with the paintings being displayed. The only complaint was that several times while we were looking at a particular painting and/or reading the synopsis of the art, we were being pushed out of the way by an extremely agressive tour guide and his group. The were extremely loud and just ook over exhibits, giing no thought to the other customers of the mueseum. Now I understand they are on a time constraint and people paid extra money for the tour, but we also paid out money and we didn't need to feel like we were being pushed out of the way and the tour took away from the pleasure of enjoying the paintings. I have been to several other museums and this sort of thing never happened. Aside from this annoyance, we really enjoyed our visit, my only suggestion would be to better train the tour guides to use their inside voice and not to be so pushy to customers who are not part of the tour.
We have occasion to head to Montreal from Vermont perhaps once a year and a stop at the Musee des Beaux-Arts is always on our list. Great permanent collection and top notch temporary exhibits.
Don't miss the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts if you are visiting Montreal. The exhibits are great and the outdoor sculptures are just wonderful. If you're hungry, their restaurant is also very good.
I visit the museum every time the temporary exhibits change. The permanent collection used to be free but since they now charge I suggest you purchase the temporary exhibit ticket and just wander the different exhibits. It's worth the cost. I can easily spend 2 hours and I have seen most of the permanent collection. There is always something new to see. Be sure to check you coat as it's much nicer to visit without having to lug your coat along. Try to avoid the week ( or the last weekend) where the new exhibit comes on as there are many people and it's not as enjoyable.
My husband knows I love museums. So of course on our visit to Montreal, we visited the Museum of Fine Arts. Boy oh boy! Was it FINE! We got to see the most extensive Faberge exhibit ever! Better than Europe! I spent hours looking over every fine detail. There were also other enthusiasts there to share in my passion. I had a wonderful time. On top of that, the museum had local jewelry designers show casing their works of art. These works of art were available for purchase! Imagine my delight, knowing I can own a piece of art, created by a designer! Besides, these exhibits, there was plenty to see. Don't miss this opportunity to visit an elegant Museum in Montreal. You and your family will have a wonderful time!
Visited during V Day weekend and it was very cold (-9F). So, we spent 3 hrs wondering around including some coffee break! Exhibition were so so, except Napoleon, Greek and Andy Warhol.
If you are in Montréal downtown and it's start raining this is a nice place to spend a couple of hours looking at fine art. they always have some nice exhibit. i saw the Fabergé Eggs collection. It was very conforting. then we had a coffee and pastry next door. Really smooth afternoon.
My wife and I have visited art museums all over the world. (I've been to about 90 countries.) We both give this museum high marks even if it doesn't have a large number of world famous works. Since we had free admission with our reciprocal membership at our home museum, we visited three times to see everything at a leisurely pace. The interpretation is above average with both details about the creator and interpretation of the work. Both of us liked the contemporary works the best in three areas--world artists, Quebec artists, and decorative arts. Overall, we found the decorative arts section more interesting than we thought it would be with an excellent selection of world-wide works. We weren't interested in the main special exhibit, but the museum had about five smaller temporary offerings that were worth our time. The Quebec section was interesting and included some other Canadian artists outside of Quebec.
My partner and I were killing time while in Montreal for our final day, and I am glad we were able to check out the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. I'm not really one for many art museums, but this complex of buildings had enough to keep us occupied for a few hours and then some.Honestly, if you are a tourist only going here once, you need at least four or five hours to see everything in all the buildings here. Because he only had about three, we unfortunately had to pick and choose which exhibits to see. I will say that the Napoleon exhibit was tremendous. You were able to see his own tricolor hat and shirts, and even the boots that he wore. There were a lot of other ephemera from the Napoleonic era and Napoleon's life. I thought that was very cool, and the MFA must have some very dedicated patrons to have put together such a comprehensive exhibit. While of course exhibits do change, while we were there, there was a big exhibit on Expressionism. It was the main draw for a lot of the people, and it definitely was crowded with people. However, I can see why it was so popular, because it, too, was comprehensive and told a long story of the Expressionist movement until WW2.They also had a Andy Warhol exhibit, but I don't know if that is in the permanent collection or a roaming exhibit. We didn't have time to look at it in-depth, because the museum was unfortunately closing at that time. That just goes to say that how interesting the exhibits are here that we were looking at them even until the museum was closing. Overall, we had a great time at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, and recommend it to any tourists in Montreal.
The Thinker greets you as you enter this excellent Museum in downtown Montreal. It is in the Golden Mile section of Ville-Marie (Peel or Guy-Concordia Metro). I went during (American) Presidents Day weekend and was quite taken with this place. I went for the Warhol posters and stayed for the Dutch Masters and modern Art. A few pieces of art made me actually change to a longer lens - don't forget to look up! I will definitively be back.
Except for one painter, I have greatly enjoyed the several trips I`ve made to the Museum in the last year or so. I saw the Chihuly and the Fabergé shows in the last year and the New York fashion fellow`s work a year or so ago. I just loved them all and specially wished I`d had my camera with me for the Chihuly one. (He did that marvellous glass work, and the Museum still retains a huge yellow sunny piece by him.) The Fabergé one had incredibly delicate work in it. I also saw the Impressionists show and bought a beautiful French book with lots of close-ups in it!I have to say, though, that I couldn`t afford to go to this Museum if it wasn`t for the social group I belong to having some entertainment funds!
We didn't have a lot of time to visit the Musee des Beaux-Arts, but admission was free, so it was definitely worth it. The museum is not huge, so it was manageable in one trip. The stairs between floors were weird though...
I'm a life member of the MBA so I go often. It has an excellent permanent collection and has been able to display some wonderful traveling exhibits like Chihuly, Picasso, Faberge, Tiffany. There are some very interesting and fun sculptures just outside the museum and activities for kids. I would have given it and excellent rating except what could I then say about the New York Met.
